How Can I Go to Heaven?
God has a gift for you! Let’s walk through it together — one step for each finger on your hand.
Heaven Is a Free Gift
Here’s the best news you’ll ever hear: Heaven is a completely free gift from God!
You can’t earn it by being good, going to church, or doing nice things. It’s free — that’s what makes it so incredible.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 6:23 · NKJV
Imagine your best friend gives you an amazing birthday present. If you tried to pay them back for it, it wouldn’t be a gift anymore — and it might hurt their feelings! Heaven works the same way. God wants to give it to you freely. You can’t pay for it or earn it.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.Ephesians 2:8–9 · NKJV
Heaven is a gift from God! You can’t earn it by being good. It’s totally free!
The Bible says eternal life is a gift. You don’t pay for it. You don’t work for it.
The gift of God is eternal life.Romans 6:23
What if a friend gave you a birthday present and you tried to pay for it? It wouldn’t be a gift anymore! Heaven is God’s free gift to you.
God wants to give you a gift!
Heaven is a free gift from God. You can’t buy it. You don’t have to earn it. God gives it because He loves you!
It’s like the best birthday present ever. You didn’t do anything to get it!
We All Fall Short
Here’s the problem: every person has sinned. That includes me, you, and everyone.
Sin isn’t just the “big stuff” like stealing or lying. It’s anything that doesn’t please God — even bad thoughts, mean words, or not doing what we know is right.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.Romans 3:23 · NKJV
Imagine making an omelette with 5 eggs. Four eggs are perfect, but the fifth one is rotten. Would you still eat it? No way! Even one sin spoils the whole thing. God’s standard is perfection, and none of us can meet it on our own.
Even if you only sinned 3 times a day, that’s over 1,000 sins in a year — and over 70,000 in a lifetime! No judge would let someone go with 70,000 wrongs on their record.
Everyone has sinned. Nobody is perfect — not even the nicest person you know!
Sin is anything that doesn’t please God. It’s not just big things. Mean thoughts and unkind words count too.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.Romans 3:23
If you made breakfast with 5 eggs and one was rotten, would you still eat it? Gross! One rotten egg ruins everything. That’s what even one sin does.
Nobody is perfect.
The Bible says everyone has done wrong things. That is called sin. Even mean thoughts are sin.
Nobody is good enough to get to Heaven alone.
Have you ever said something unkind? Everyone has. Grown-ups too!
Loving and Fair
God is love. He doesn’t want to punish anyone. He wants everyone to be with Him in Heaven!
God is love.1 John 4:8 · NKJV
But here’s the hard part: God is also just. He’s a perfect judge, and a perfect judge must punish sin. He can’t just pretend sin didn’t happen.
The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guiltyExodus 34:6–7 · NKJV
So we have a big problem: God loves us and wants us in Heaven, but our sin separates us from Him. How can a loving God who must punish sin still let us in?
The answer is the most amazing part of the whole story…
God loves you so much! He wants everyone to be with Him in Heaven.
But God is also a perfect judge. He has to punish sin. He can’t just ignore it.
God is love.1 John 4:8
So how can God love us and still punish sin? That seems impossible! But God made a way…
God loves you very, very much!
But sin makes God sad. He can’t let sin into Heaven.
So God made an amazing plan to help us! Want to hear it?
God’s Amazing Answer
Jesus is the answer! He is fully God and fully man.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:1 · NKJV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among usJohn 1:14 · NKJV
Jesus left Heaven and came to earth to save us. He lived a perfect life, then died on the cross to pay the punishment for our sin.
All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.Isaiah 53:6 · NKJV
On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). The Greek word is tetelestai (say: teh-TEL-es-tie). It was used to mean “paid in full.” Jesus never sinned, so He had no debt of His own. He was paying for ours.
Then He rose from the dead three days later, showing He had beaten sin and death forever!
Jesus is God’s Son! He came from Heaven to earth to save us.
Jesus never sinned. He was perfect. But He chose to die on the cross to take the punishment for our sins.
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.Isaiah 53:6
It’s like Jesus said, “I’ll take the punishment so you don’t have to!” Then He came back to life three days later!
Jesus is God’s Son!
God sent Jesus from Heaven to help us. Jesus never did anything wrong.
Jesus died on the cross for the wrong things we did. Then He came back to life!
Someone broke a rule. A big brother said, “I’ll take the punishment.” Jesus did that for us!
Trusting in Jesus
So how do you receive this free gift? By faith — trusting in Jesus Christ alone.
Real saving faith isn’t just believing God exists (even the demons believe that!). And it’s not just praying when you have problems. Saving faith means trusting in Jesus alone for eternal life.
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be savedActs 16:31 · NKJV
Picture a chair. You can believe it’s there. You can believe it could hold someone up. But it won’t hold you up until you actually sit in it! That’s faith — taking your trust off yourself and putting your full weight on Jesus.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.John 6:47 · NKJV
