A LETTER TO EPHESUS · 1:3EPHESIANS 1:3“who has blessed uswith every spiritualblessing”EPHESIANS 1:1“To the saints whoare in Ephesus”Paul praised God for every blessing in Christ.

A letter to Ephesus. Paul wrote this letter “to the saints who are in Ephesus” (1:1). A saint is not a super-good person. It is anyone God has made His own through Jesus. Paul was most likely in prison when he wrote, yet he begins with praise. Blessed be God. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (1:3). To bless God is to praise Him and speak well of Him. God blesses us with His gifts, and we bless Him back with thanks. Spiritual blessings. These are not toys, money or an easy life. They are gifts for the soul. Being chosen and loved by God, being forgiven, being made His children and being given His Spirit are some of them. In Christ. Again and again Paul says “in Him” or “in Christ.” Every blessing reaches us through Jesus. Without Him we would have none of them. With Him we have every one. One God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God. What this means for you. If you trust Jesus, you are already rich in the things that matter most. Start your prayers with thanks before you ask for anything.

CHOSEN IN LOVE · 1:4-6EPHESIANS 1:4“before the foundationof the world”EPHESIANS 1:5“adoption as sonsby Jesus Christ”Before the world began, God planned to welcome His children.

Chosen before the world began. “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world” (1:4). Before God made the first star, He already loved His people and planned to bring them to Himself. Chosen in Him. God’s choosing happened “in Him,” in Christ. God did not pick us because we were good. He loved us in His Son. Holy and without blame. He chose us “that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love” (1:4). Holy means set apart for God. Without blame means no sin left on our record. Only Jesus can make sinners like that. His own children. God planned “adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself” (1:5). When a family adopts, the child is wanted, welcomed and given the family name. His good pleasure. All of this was “according to the good pleasure of His will” (1:5). God was glad to do it. Nobody forced Him; He loves to save. Accepted. “By which He made us accepted in the Beloved” (1:6). The Beloved is Jesus, the Son the Father loves. Because believers are in Him, the Father welcomes them too. Praise for grace. It is all “to the praise of the glory of His grace” (1:6). Grace is God’s kindness to people who do not deserve it. For everyone who believes. Paul tells the Ephesians that they were sealed “having believed” (1:13). Everyone who trusts Jesus is welcome. What this means for you. You were never an afterthought. God planned to love you before the world began, and in Jesus He welcomes you.

SET FREE · 1:7-12EPHESIANS 1:7“redemption throughHis blood”EPHESIANS 1:7“the forgivenessof sins”Jesus gave His life on the cross to set us free.

Redemption. “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (1:7). Redemption means being set free because someone paid the price. Jesus paid that price when He gave His life on the cross. Through His blood. His blood means His life given in death. Jesus did not only teach us about God; He died in our place. Forgiven. Forgiveness means God no longer holds our sins against us. The debt is canceled because Jesus paid it. A picture. Many Christians see the Passover lamb, whose blood marked the doors of God’s people in Egypt, as a picture of Jesus. Rich grace. All of it is “according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us” (1:7-8). He poured out His grace. A secret told. God has “made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself” (1:9). A mystery here is a plan God kept hidden for a long time and has now told openly. Safe secrets. God never asks children to keep a secret that hurts them. If anyone asks you to hide something from the grown-ups who care for you, or a secret makes you feel scared or confused, tell a parent or a trusted grown-up. All things in Christ. God’s plan is to “gather together in one all things in Christ” (1:10). Jesus will be the head over everything in heaven and on earth. A plan that never fails. God “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (1:11). He also has good things saved up for His children. The first to trust. Paul most likely means himself and other Jewish believers, among the first who “trusted in Christ” (1:12). What this means for you. If you trust Jesus, your sins are forgiven, completely and for good. Thank Him for the price He paid.

PROMISETO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY · 1:13-14EPHESIANS 1:13“sealed with the HolySpirit of promise”EPHESIANS 1:14“the guarantee ofour inheritance”God’s Spirit is His seal and His promise.

You also. “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (1:13). The Ephesians heard the good news, believed it and trusted Jesus. Sealed. “Having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (1:13). In Paul’s day a seal was a mark pressed into soft wax with a ring or a stamp. It showed who owned something, that it was real, and that it was kept safe. God’s seal. God puts His own seal on every believer: the Holy Spirit Himself, living inside. The guarantee. The Spirit “is the guarantee of our inheritance” (1:14). A guarantee is like a first payment that promises the rest is coming. God gives His Spirit now as His promise of all He will give later. Until the day. The guarantee lasts “until the redemption of the purchased possession” (1:14). Jesus bought His people with His own life, and one day God will bring them home to be with Him forever. Praise again. All of it is “to the praise of His glory” (1:14). The Father planned, the Son paid, the Spirit seals, and God receives the praise. What this means for you. If you trust Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you as God’s mark and God’s promise. When you feel unsure, remember who has put His seal on you.

The Gospel Connection
☆

The problem. Every one of us has sinned. Sin separates us from God, and no amount of trying can erase it. We need a Savior.

God’s plan. Before the world began, God the Father planned to rescue a people for Himself and make them His children (1:4-5).

God’s love. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

The price. Jesus gave His life on the cross. “In Him we have redemption through His blood” (1:7).

The cross. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3).

Risen. “He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4). Jesus is alive today, and He will never die again.

Forgiven. Everyone who trusts Jesus receives “the forgiveness of sins” (1:7).

Welcomed. God accepts believers “in the Beloved” (1:6), because they belong to His Son.

Sealed. God gives the Holy Spirit to everyone who believes, as His seal and His promise (1:13-14).

Brought to God. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).

Praise. From beginning to end, salvation is God’s work, “to the praise of His glory” (1:14).

Your response. Turn from your sin and trust Jesus, who died and rose for you. Then praise God and thank Him for every spiritual blessing in Christ.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
— Ephesians 1:7a (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Paul wrote these words to the believers in Ephesus in the middle of a song of praise. “In Him” means in Jesus. Everything good God gives us, He gives through His Son. “We have redemption” means we have been set free because Someone paid the price. We could not free ourselves from sin. “Through His blood” tells us the price: Jesus gave His life on the cross. Then God raised Him from the dead, and He is alive today. “The forgiveness of sins” tells us what that freedom means. God no longer holds our sins against us. Paul says “we have,” not we hope to have someday. If you trust Jesus, you are forgiven right now. When you remember something wrong you have done, tell God you are sorry, then say this verse and thank Him that Jesus paid for it. Learn it this week, and share it with someone who needs to know they can be forgiven.
