THE HELPER JESUS PROMISED · 2:1-4ACTS 2:2“a rushingmighty wind”ACTS 2:4“filled with theHoly Spirit”The Holy Spirit came, just as Jesus promised.

A promise kept. Jesus had told His friends, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8). A few days after Jesus went back to heaven, on the Day of Pentecost, that promise came true. Together. “They were all with one accord in one place” (2:1). One accord means they were united. They had been praying together, just as Jesus told them to wait (Acts 1:14). A sound like wind. “A sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind” filled the whole house (2:2). Jesus once said the Spirit is like the wind. You cannot see the wind, but you can hear it and see what it does (John 3:8). Flames like fire. “Divided tongues, as of fire” rested on each one (2:3). John the Baptist had said Jesus would baptize “with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Luke 3:16). All filled. “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (2:4). Not only Peter and the leaders, but every believer in the room. A Person, not a force. The Holy Spirit is not a thing or a feeling. He is God, and Jesus called Him “the Helper” (John 14:26). He teaches, He guides and He comforts. What this means for you. Everyone who trusts Jesus has the Holy Spirit living inside (1 Corinthians 6:19). He gives you power to live for Jesus and to tell others about Him.

♪ ♪ ♪♪ ♪ ♪GOOD NEWS IN EVERY LANGUAGE · 2:5-13ACTS 2:6“in his ownlanguage”ACTS 2:11“the wonderfulworks of God”Visitors from many lands heard God praised in their own language.

From every nation. “There were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven” (2:5). Devout means they loved God and tried hard to keep His law. They had come to Jerusalem for the feast. Their own language. Each visitor heard the believers speak “in his own language” (2:6). God did not make them learn a new language first. He met them in the language they grew up with. God's wonderful works. They heard “the wonderful works of God” (2:11). The believers were not bragging about themselves. They were praising God for what He had done. Babel turned around. Long ago at Babel, “the Lord confused the language of all the earth” and scattered the people (Genesis 11:9). At Pentecost God used many languages to bring people together around Jesus. Many Christians see Pentecost as God beginning to undo Babel. Curious or mocking. Some asked, “Whatever could this mean?” (2:12). Others laughed and said, “They are full of new wine” (2:13). The same miracle made some people want to know more and made others laugh. What this means for you. Jesus is for every country and every kind of person. When you tell others about Him, some will listen and some may laugh. Keep telling the good news anyway, with kindness.

JESUS IS LORD AND CHRIST · 2:14-36ACTS 2:32“This Jesus Godhas raised up”ACTS 2:36“both Lordand Christ”Peter stood up with the eleven and told the crowd about Jesus.

Brave Peter. Just weeks before, Peter had said three times that he did not know Jesus. Now Peter, “standing up with the eleven, raised his voice” (2:14). Jesus had prayed for him: “I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail” (Luke 22:32). God's promise in Joel. Peter said, “This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel” (2:16). God had promised, “I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh” (2:17). All flesh means all kinds of people: sons and daughters, young and old, men and women. God's plan. Jesus was handed over “by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God” (2:23). Foreknowledge means God knew it ahead of time. The cross was not an accident. God planned it to save us. Death could not hold Him. God raised Jesus, “because it was not possible that He should be held by it” (2:24). David pointed ahead. David wrote, “Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption” (2:27). Corruption means rotting in the grave. David died and stayed in his tomb, but Jesus rose (2:29-32). Lord and Christ. “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (2:36). Lord means the One who rules over everything. Christ means the King God promised to send. What this means for you. The Holy Spirit made Peter brave and pointed him to Jesus. He can do the same for you when you are afraid to speak up.

WHAT SHALL WE DO? · 2:37-41ACTS 2:38“Repent, and letevery one of yoube baptized”ACTS 2:41“about threethousand souls”About three thousand people believed and were baptized.

Cut to the heart. “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart” (2:37). The Holy Spirit showed them their sin. They knew they had rejected God's own Son. The big question. “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (2:37). It is the most important question anyone can ask. Repent. Peter answered, “Repent” (2:38). To repent means to turn around: to turn away from sin and turn to God. It is more than feeling sorry. Be baptized. Each one was to be baptized “in the name of Jesus Christ” (2:38). Baptism follows believing. It is an outward picture of an inward change: the old life buried, and a new life raised with Jesus (Romans 6:4). Baptism does not save anyone. Jesus saves. A gift. They would be forgiven and “receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (2:38). A gift is free. No one earns it. For you too. “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off” (2:39). That includes you. A great harvest. “Those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (2:41). What this means for you. If you have never asked Jesus to forgive you, you can call on Him today. He promises to save everyone who calls on Him (2:21).

The problem. Peter told the crowd, “Him… you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death” (2:23). Their sin is our sin too: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Jesus died because of our sins.

Our efforts fail. The crowd was full of “devout men” (2:5) who kept God's feasts. They still needed a Savior. Being religious is not the same as being forgiven. God saves us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5).

God's plan. Jesus was delivered up “by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God” (2:23). The cross was God's plan to rescue us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16).

Risen and reigning. “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses” (2:32). He was “exalted to the right hand of God” (2:33), and He poured out the Holy Spirit on His people. Jesus is not just a good teacher from long ago. He is alive, and He is Lord.

The response. Peter said, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (2:38). Turn from sin, trust Jesus, and tell the world you belong to Him. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

“And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.”
— Acts 2:21 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Peter was quoting the prophet Joel (Joel 2:32). God had promised this hundreds of years before, and on Pentecost Peter said the time had come. “Whoever” means anyone at all: young or old, from any country, no matter what they have done. The crowd in front of Peter had helped put Jesus on the cross, and the promise was still for them. “Calls on the name of the Lord” means to cry out to God, trusting Him to save you. A name stands for the person. To call on the Lord's name is to call on Jesus Himself, because Peter went on to show that God made Jesus “both Lord and Christ” (2:36). “Shall be saved” is a promise, not a maybe. Saved means rescued from sin and its punishment, and brought into God's family forever. You do not have to be good enough first. You call, and God saves. Say this verse when you feel too bad to come to God, and remember that Jesus never turns away anyone who calls on Him.
