UP MOUNT NEBO · 34:1DEUTERONOMY 31:7“Be strong andof good courage”DEUTERONOMY 34:1“Moses went up…to Mount Nebo”Moses said goodbye and climbed Mount Nebo.

A charge to Joshua. Before he climbed, Moses told Joshua, “Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land” (31:7). The Lord goes first. “And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you” (31:8). This is the memory verse. Up the mountain. “Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho” (34:1). Pisgah was the peak of the ridge. God showed him. “And the Lord showed him all the land” (34:1). God Himself was the guide. North to south. From Gilead and Dan in the north to Judah and the Western Sea, and down to the South (34:1-3). The Western Sea is the Mediterranean. The city of palm trees. Moses saw “the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees” (34:3). Jericho would be Israel's first city. Old but strong. Moses was one hundred and twenty years old, yet his eyes were clear (34:7). What we learn. God was faithful to Moses to the very end, and He let him see the promise come true.

THE LAND GOD PROMISED · 34:1-4DEUTERONOMY 34:1“the Lord showedhim all the land”DEUTERONOMY 34:3“the city ofpalm trees”From the mountain top, God showed Moses the whole land.

An old promise. “This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” (34:4). To your descendants. God had said, “I will give it to your descendants” (34:4). Descendants means children and grandchildren down the years. Promise kept. Hundreds of years had passed since God spoke to Abraham (Genesis 12:7). God had not forgotten. Seen with his eyes. “I have caused you to see it with your eyes” (34:4). Moses saw the promise. But not entered. “But you shall not cross over there” (34:4). Why not? At Meribah God had said, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land” (Numbers 20:12). Kindness in discipline. God did not take back His word, but He let Moses see the whole land from the top of the mountain. What we learn. God keeps every promise, even when it takes a long time. Sin is serious, even for great leaders.

MOSES' LAST DAY · 34:5-8DEUTERONOMY 34:5“Moses the servantof the Lord”DEUTERONOMY 34:8“wept for Mosesthirty days”Moses died, and God's people were very sad.

The servant of the Lord. “So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord” (34:5). This is Moses' best title. Buried by God. “And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab” (34:6). God Himself cared for Moses' body. An unknown grave. “But no one knows his grave to this day” (34:6). No one could make it a shrine. Strong to the end. Moses was one hundred and twenty, and his eyes were not dim (34:7). Thirty days of tears. “And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days” (34:8). Mourning ends. “So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended” (34:8). Grief had its time, and then life went on. Precious death. “Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15). Saints means God's people. What we learn. God cares for His people in life and in death, and it is right to grieve.

JOSHUA AND A GREATER PROPHET · 34:9-12DEUTERONOMY 34:9“Moses had laid hishands on him”DEUTERONOMY 18:15“a Prophetlike me”Joshua became the new leader, and God promised a greater Prophet.

Joshua. “Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him” (34:9). The people listened. “So the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses” (34:9). Heeded means listened and obeyed. Face to face. “Since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (34:10). Signs and wonders. Moses did “all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt” (34:11). A promise. Moses had said, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me” (Deuteronomy 18:15). Peter's answer. In Acts 3:22 Peter quoted those words and said they were about Jesus. Greater than Moses. “For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses” (Hebrews 3:3). What we learn. God always gives His people a leader. The greatest leader is Jesus, the Prophet Moses promised.

The Gospel Connection
☆

The problem. Even Moses, the great prophet, fell short. God said, “Because you did not believe Me… you shall not bring this assembly into the land” (Numbers 20:12). “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Our efforts fail. The law came through Moses, but the law could not bring anyone into God's final rest. “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). Salvation is “not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The greater Prophet. Moses promised, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me” (Deuteronomy 18:15). Jesus is that Prophet, and “this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses” (Hebrews 3:3).

The cross and the empty tomb. On the mountain, Moses and Elijah “spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Decease means death. Jesus died for our sins and “rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

The response. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Jesus promises, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).

“And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
— Deuteronomy 31:8 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Moses spoke these words to Joshua in front of all Israel, just before Moses climbed Mount Nebo. Joshua was about to lead the people without Moses. “And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you”: God would go ahead of Joshua into every hard place. “He will be with you”: God would also walk beside him. “He will not leave you nor forsake you”: forsake means abandon or give up on someone. God never does that to His people. “Do not fear nor be dismayed”: dismayed means discouraged or upset. Because God is with us, we do not need to be afraid. Moses was leaving, but God was staying. People we love sometimes move away or die, but God never leaves. The same promise is given to every Christian: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Say this verse when you face something new or scary, and remember that Jesus has already gone ahead of you.
