THE BEGINNING OF THE GOOD NEWS · 1:1MARK 1:1“The beginning ofthe gospel”MATTHEW 1:21“He will save His peoplefrom their sins”The good news is all about Jesus, the Son of God.

Good news. Mark begins, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (1:1). The word gospel means good news. It is not good advice about how to be a better person. It is news about something God has done. Jesus. An angel told Joseph, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). His name tells us why He came. Christ. Christ is not Jesus' last name. It means the Anointed One, the King God promised long ago. Israel waited hundreds of years for Him. The Son of God. Jesus is more than a good teacher. He is God the Son, who came from heaven and became a man. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). A beginning. Mark starts when Jesus is a grown man, ready to begin His work. The good news began with Jesus, and it is still going today wherever people believe in Him. Believe it. Soon Jesus Himself said, “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (1:15). Good news is something you receive. It is not something you earn. What this means for you. The biggest question in your life is, Who is Jesus? God's Word answers it right here: He is the Christ, the Son of God. When you know who He is, you can trust everything He says and everything He did for you.

THE WAY MADE READY · 1:2-6MALACHI 3:1“Behold, I sendMy messenger”ISAIAH 40:3“Prepare the wayof the Lord”John called people to get their hearts ready for the Lord.

Written long before. Mark says, “As it is written in the Prophets” (1:2). Verse 2 comes from Malachi 3:1, and verse 3 comes from Isaiah 40:3. Both were written hundreds of years before John was born. The messenger. God said, “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face” (1:2). John was that messenger. His job was to go first and get people ready. A road for a King. In Bible times, workers filled holes and straightened the road when a king was coming. “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight” (1:3). John was not fixing roads. He was getting hearts ready. Who is coming? Isaiah wrote, “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3). The One coming is the Lord, our God. That One is Jesus. Jesus is God who came to His people. How hearts get ready. John preached “a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” (1:4). Repentance means turning from sin to God. Remission means forgiveness. A humble messenger. John wore camel's hair and ate locusts and wild honey (1:6). He did not live for comfort or for fame. He lived for the One who was coming. What this means for you. God keeps every promise, right on time. Your heart can be ready for Jesus too, when you turn to Him and trust Him.

ONE MIGHTIER THAN JOHN · 1:7-9MARK 1:7“One after me who ismightier than I”MARK 1:8“He will baptize youwith the Holy Spirit”John pointed to Jesus, the One far greater than he was.

Mightier. John preached, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I” (1:7). John was bold and brave, but Jesus is far greater. The sandal strap. Taking off someone's sandals was a job for the lowest servant. John said he was “not worthy to stoop down and loose” Jesus' sandal strap (1:7). John was glad to be small so that Jesus could be seen. Water and the Spirit. “I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” (1:8). Water can wash the outside. Only God can make a heart new. God promised, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26). Only God gives the Spirit. No prophet could pour out God's Spirit on people. When John said Jesus would do it, he was saying that Jesus is God. Jesus in the river. “Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan” (1:9). The people in that river were confessing their sins. Jesus had none to confess. He was “tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Why He came. Jesus stepped into the water to stand with sinners. One day He would take their place on the cross. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21). What this means for you. Jesus is not ashamed to stand beside people who need forgiveness. Like John, you can point others to Him.

FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT · 1:10-11MARK 1:10“He saw the heavensparting”MARK 1:11“You are Mybeloved Son”The Father spoke, and the Spirit came down like a dove.

Torn open. “And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting” (1:10). For hundreds of years God's people had prayed for Him to come down to them. Now heaven opened over Jesus. The Spirit like a dove. Jesus saw “the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove” (1:10). The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a bird. He came in a gentle way that could be seen. Ready for His work. Jesus later read these words about Himself: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor” (Luke 4:18). Christ means Anointed One. At the Jordan the Christ was anointed for His work. The Father's voice. “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (1:11). Beloved means dearly loved. Before any miracle. Jesus had not yet healed anyone or preached a single sermon. The Father's love for His Son was not earned. It has always been there. One God. The Father speaks, the Son is baptized and the Spirit comes down. There is one God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians call this the Trinity. What this means for you. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). If you trust Jesus, the Father loves you as His child too.

The Gospel Connection

The problem. The crowds at the Jordan came “confessing their sins” (1:5). They knew they were not clean before God, and they were right. So are we: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

What cannot fix it. John's water could wash the body, but it could not change a heart. Trying harder cannot do it either. God saves us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5).

The Son God sent. The Father said, “You are My beloved Son” (1:11). Then He gave that beloved Son for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

The cross and the empty tomb. Jesus stood with sinners in the river so that He could die for sinners on the cross. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21). He was buried, and “He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:4).

The response. Jesus said, “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Turn from your sin and trust Him as your Savior. He forgives you, gives you the Holy Spirit to live in you, and makes you a child of God (John 1:12). Baptism comes after believing. It is an outward picture of the new life Jesus has already given.

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
— Mark 1:1 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

This is the very first verse of the book of Mark. It tells you what the whole book is about in one line. “The beginning”: God's good news began when Jesus came, and it is still going today. “Of the gospel”: gospel means good news. It is news about what God has done, not a list of things you must do. “Of Jesus”: His name means the Lord saves. “Christ”: the Anointed One, the King God promised. “The Son of God”: Jesus is God the Son, who came from heaven to be with us. Some people think of Jesus as only a good teacher. This verse says much more: He is the promised King and God's own Son. Later in this same chapter Jesus says, “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (1:15). The verse is short, but it answers the most important question anyone can ask: Who is Jesus? Say it when someone asks what you believe. You can tell them in twelve words.
