A WEDDING IN CANA · JOHN 2:1-3JOHN 2:1“there was a weddingin Cana of Galilee”JOHN 2:3“They haveno wine.”Jesus came to a wedding, and the wine ran out.

Jesus at a wedding. “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there” (2:1). Cana was a small town in the hills of Galilee, not far from Nazareth, where Jesus grew up. Invited. “Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding” (2:2). His disciples had only just begun to follow Him (John 1:35-51). A long party. In Bible times a wedding feast could last for days. The bridegroom's family had to feed all the guests the whole time. A real problem. When the wine ran out, Mary said to Jesus, “They have no wine” (2:3). Running out would bring shame on the family in front of the whole town. Jesus cares about everyday life. Jesus' first miracle did not happen in the temple or on a battlefield. It happened at a family party. Jesus cares about our homes, our families and our happy days. Mary's prayer. Mary did not tell Jesus what to do. She simply told Him the need and left it with Him. That is a good way to pray. What we learn. You can bring any problem to Jesus, big or small. Peter wrote that God “cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

MY HOUR HAS NOT YET COME · JOHN 2:4-5JOHN 2:4“My hour hasnot yet come.”JOHN 2:5“Whatever He saysto you, do it.”Mary trusted Jesus and pointed the servants to Him.

Jesus' answer. “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come” (2:4). Woman. To us this sounds rude, but it was a kind and respectful way to speak to a woman in those days. The ICB says “Dear woman.” Jesus loved His mother. A new way. Jesus was now doing His Father's work. Mary would come to Him as her Lord, not only as her son. My hour. When Jesus talks about His hour in John's Gospel, He means the time of His cross and glory. Later He said, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified” (John 12:23). Mary's trust. Mary did not argue or give up. She turned to the servants and said, “Whatever He says to you, do it” (2:5). This is our memory verse. Mary pointed to Jesus. Mary did not point the servants to herself. She pointed them to her Son. Mary called God “my Savior” (Luke 1:47), and she knew Jesus was the One to trust. What we learn. When you do not understand Jesus' timing, you can still trust Him and do what He says.

FILL THEM TO THE BRIM · JOHN 2:6-8JOHN 2:7“Fill the waterpotswith water.”JOHN 2:7“they filled themup to the brim”The servants obeyed and filled the jars to the top.

Six stone jars. “Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece” (2:6). Washing water. Purification means making clean. Jewish people washed their hands and dishes with this water as a way of being clean before God (Mark 7:3-4). A lot of water. Six jars of twenty or thirty gallons each is more than a hundred gallons! Jesus was about to give far more than the party needed. A strange order. “Fill the waterpots with water” (2:7). The family needed wine, not water. The servants obeyed anyway. To the brim. “And they filled them up to the brim” (2:7). The servants did not do half the job. They obeyed all the way. A step of faith. “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast” (2:8). The servants carried what looked like water to the man in charge. That took trust. What we learn. Obeying Jesus can seem strange at first. Do what He says anyway, and do it all the way. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

THE BEST WINE AND HIS GLORY · JOHN 2:9-11JOHN 2:10“You have kept the goodwine until now!”JOHN 2:11“and manifestedHis glory”Jesus showed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

The taste test. The master of the feast “tasted the water that was made wine” (2:9). He did not know where it came from, but the servants knew. The best for last. He told the bridegroom, “You have kept the good wine until now!” (2:10). Usually the best was served first. Jesus gave the best. A sign. “This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee” (2:11). A sign is a miracle that points to who Jesus is. His glory. Jesus “manifested His glory” (2:11). Manifested means showed. Only God can turn water into wine in a moment. John wrote, “we beheld His glory” (John 1:14). They believed. “And His disciples believed in Him” (2:11). The sign helped them trust Him more. On to Capernaum. Then Jesus went down to Capernaum with His mother, His brothers and His disciples (2:12). Capernaum, by the Sea of Galilee, became His home base. What we learn. Jesus does not give leftovers. When He changes a life, He makes it new. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The problem. The stone jars held water for washing, “according to the manner of purification of the Jews” (2:6). Water can wash hands and cups, but it cannot wash a heart. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is not dirt on our hands. It is wrong in our hearts, and it keeps us away from God.

Our efforts fail. Being religious and keeping rules cannot make us clean inside. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Even the best person still needs a Savior.

Jesus' hour. At Cana Jesus said, “My hour has not yet come” (2:4). His hour was the cross. There He gave His life for us, and “the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Jesus took the punishment for our sin so that we could be forgiven. Water could never do that.

Risen. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and… He was buried, and… He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). The disciples who saw His glory at Cana later saw Him alive. Jesus is alive today.

The response. “His disciples believed in Him” (2:11). “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). Believing means trusting Him, not just knowing about Him. Trust Jesus, and then do whatever He says.

“Whatever He says to you, do it.”
— John 2:5 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Mary spoke these words to the servants at the wedding in Cana, right after she told Jesus, “They have no wine.” “Whatever He says”: Mary pointed the servants to Jesus, not to herself. Jesus is the One with the answers. “to you”: Jesus speaks to ordinary people like the servants, and like you. Today He speaks to us through the Bible. “do it”: it is not enough to hear what Jesus says. We show we trust Him by doing it. The servants filled the jars with water even though it seemed strange, and they got to see a miracle. Obeying does not earn God's love. Jesus loves us first, and we obey because we trust Him. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). This week, when you read or hear what Jesus says, ask Him to help you do it right away and all the way, even when you do not understand why.
