A TEACHER COMES AT NIGHT · 3:1-3JOHN 3:2“This man cameto Jesus by night”JOHN 3:3“unless one isborn again”Nicodemus came to Jesus at night, and Jesus welcomed him.

A leader came. Nicodemus was “a man of the Pharisees” and “a ruler of the Jews” (3:1). Pharisees worked hard to keep every part of God's law, and people looked up to them. He came by night. “This man came to Jesus by night” (3:2). Whatever his reason was, Jesus did not turn him away. Jesus still welcomes people who come with honest questions. He knew something true. Nicodemus said, “We know that You are a teacher come from God” (3:2). He had seen Jesus' miracles, and he could tell that God was with Him. Jesus went to the heart. Jesus answered, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (3:3). Nicodemus wanted to talk about teaching. Jesus talked about new life. Good is not enough. If anyone could get into God's kingdom by being good, it was Nicodemus. But Jesus said even he needed to be born again. Our hearts need more than better habits. They need a new start that only God can give. What this means for you. Going to church and knowing Bible facts are good things. But they are not the same as having new life from God. Jesus invites you to come to Him, just like Nicodemus did.

BORN OF THE SPIRIT · 3:4-8JOHN 3:8“The wind blowswhere it wishes”EZEKIEL 36:26“I will give youa new heart”You cannot see the wind, but you can see what it does.

A real question. Nicodemus asked, “How can a man be born when he is old?” (3:4). He thought Jesus meant a second birth like the first one. Water and the Spirit. Jesus answered, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (3:5). Jesus was talking about a new life that God gives. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes a person new. Two kinds of birth. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (3:6). Your parents gave you your body. Only God's Spirit can give you new life with God. God promised this. Long before, God said, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26). Nicodemus taught the Scriptures, so he knew God had made this promise. Like the wind. “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it” (3:8). You cannot see the wind, but you can see what it does. In the same way, the Holy Spirit is unseen, but you can see the change He makes in a person. Baptism. Baptism is a picture of this new life. It comes after a person believes, and it shows the change on the outside. The water does not make a person new. The Holy Spirit does. What this means for you. You cannot make yourself born again, just as you did not make yourself born the first time. New life is a gift. Ask God for it, and trust Jesus.

THE SNAKE ON THE POLE · 3:14-15NUMBERS 21:8“when he looks at it,shall live”JOHN 3:14“so must the Sonof Man be lifted up”The bronze serpent pointed ahead to Jesus lifted up on the cross.

How can it be? Nicodemus asked, “How can these things be?” (3:9). Jesus answered, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?” (3:10). Jesus knows. “We speak what We know and testify what We have seen” (3:11). Jesus is not guessing about God. He came “down from heaven” (3:13). The snake in the desert. When Israel complained against God, poisonous snakes bit the people. God told Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live” (Numbers 21:8). Lifted up. Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (3:14). Jesus was lifted up on the cross. Later He said this showed “by what death He would die” (John 12:33). Just look. The bitten people did not need medicine or a long list of good deeds. They only had to look. Believing in Jesus is like that look: we trust Him to save us. Eternal life. “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (3:15). Eternal life is life with God that never ends, and it starts the moment you believe. What this means for you. Sin has hurt every heart, like poison from a snake bite. Look to Jesus, who was lifted up for you.

GOD'S LOVE AND THE LIGHT · 3:16-21JOHN 3:16“For God so lovedthe world”JOHN 3:21“he who does the truthcomes to the light”God sent His Son to save the world. Come to the Light!

So loved. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (3:16). God's love is not just a feeling. He showed it by giving. The world. The world means all people, even people who did not love God back. Nobody is too far away for God's love. Only begotten. Jesus is God's one and only Son. God gave the One most precious to Him. Whoever. “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (3:16). Whoever means anyone at all. Perish means to be lost forever, away from God. Sent to save. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (3:17). Condemn means to judge someone guilty. Believe or refuse. “He who believes in Him is not condemned” (3:18). A person who refuses Jesus stays in his sin, because there is no other Savior. Light and darkness. “The light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (3:19). People hide from light when they do not want their sin seen. But “he who does the truth comes to the light” (3:21). Nicodemus later. Later, Nicodemus spoke up for Jesus in front of the leaders, and he helped bury Jesus' body (John 7:50-51; 19:39). The man who came at night stood with Jesus in the open. What this means for you. You do not have to hide. Come to Jesus just as you are. He came to save you, not to shame you.

The problem. Nicodemus was religious, respected and careful, and he still needed to be born again. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is more than the wrong things we do. It is a heart turned away from God.

Our efforts fail. Trying harder cannot give anyone a new heart. God saved us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5). Being good, going to church and knowing the Bible cannot make a person born again. Nicodemus could not make himself born again, and neither can we.

God's answer. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). Jesus was lifted up on the cross like the bronze serpent, and there He carried our sin. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Like the people in the desert, we only need to look to Him in faith.

Risen. Jesus died, was buried and rose again on the third day. Because He lives, He gives new life. He is alive today. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The response. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). Turn from your sin and trust Jesus. The Holy Spirit will make you new, and you will belong to God forever. Then tell someone what God has done for you.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
— John 3:16 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, the teacher who came to Him at night. “For God so loved the world”: God loves every kind of person in every place, and that includes you. “That He gave His only begotten Son”: God's love is a giving love. He gave the most precious gift He had, His one and only Son. “That whoever believes in Him”: whoever means anyone. You do not have to be a leader like Nicodemus or have a perfect past. To believe means to trust Jesus completely, the way the bitten Israelites trusted God by looking at the bronze serpent. “Should not perish but have everlasting life”: perish means to be lost forever, away from God. Everlasting life means living with God forever, starting now. Many people learn this verse first, because it tells the whole good news in one sentence. Say it each morning this week, and put your own name in it: God so loved me that He gave His Son for me.
