CAPERNAUMTO CANA →JOHN 4:47“come down andheal his son”The officer's son was very sick, so he went to find Jesus.

Back in Cana. “So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine” (4:46). This was the town of Jesus' first sign. People there had already seen His power. An important man. A nobleman was an officer who served the king. He had a home, servants and power (4:51). A sick son. His son was sick in Capernaum, “for he was at the point of death” (4:47). Money and power could not stop the fever. Troubles we cannot fix. Sickness comes to rich and poor alike. Some troubles are bigger than anything people can fix. He went himself. Capernaum sat by the Sea of Galilee, about twenty miles from Cana and far below it. That is why he asked Jesus to “come down and heal his son” (4:47). He made the long climb himself. He kept asking. The word implored means he begged Jesus again and again. An important man humbled himself before a traveling teacher from Nazareth. What we learn. Trouble can bring us to Jesus. The Bible says, “casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). No problem is too big to bring to Him, and no person is too important to need Him.

MORE THAN A SHOW · 4:48-49JOHN 4:48“Unless you peoplesee signs and wonders”JOHN 4:49“Sir, come downbefore my child dies!”The father begged Jesus to come before his child died.

A hard saying. Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe” (4:48). He was speaking to the crowd in Galilee as well as to the father. Signs and wonders. A sign is a miracle that points to who Jesus is. A wonder is something that makes people amazed. The people of Galilee had seen what Jesus did in Jerusalem (4:45). They wanted more wonders, but they were not trusting Him. Not a show. Jesus never did miracles just to amaze people. Every sign was meant to lead people to believe in Him. A test. Jesus' words tested the father. Would he walk away hurt? Would he argue that he deserved help? A humble answer. He said, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” (4:49). He did not defend himself. He simply asked again. My child. The father called his son “my child.” His love for his boy kept him asking. What we learn. Jesus wants more than our interest in His power. He wants our trust. When an answer does not come right away, keep coming to Him the way this father did.

BELIEVING HIS WORD · 4:50JOHN 4:50“Go your way;your son lives.”JOHN 4:50“So the man believedthe word”The man believed Jesus' word and started home.

Jesus did not go. The father asked Jesus to come down. Jesus stayed where He was and gave him a promise instead. The promise. “Go your way; your son lives” (4:50). Jesus spoke as if it had already happened, because it had. Believing the word. “So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way” (4:50). He had nothing to see. He had only Jesus' word. Faith takes a step. His believing showed in what he did. Jesus told him to go, and he went. Real faith acts on what Jesus says. Faith, not sight. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). The father walked home by faith, one step at a time. What faith is. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is being sure that what God has promised is true. Faith grows by hearing. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). What we learn. We have not seen Jesus with our eyes, but we have His word in the Bible. When He says He loves you and forgives you, you can believe it and live like it is true.

THE SEVENTH HOURAT THE SAME HOUR · 4:51-53JOHN 4:51“Your sonlives!”JOHN 4:52“at the seventh hourthe fever left him”At the very hour Jesus spoke, the fever left the boy.

Good news on the road. As the father was going down, his servants met him and said, “Your son lives!” (4:51). They used the very words Jesus had spoken. The exact time. He asked when the boy got better. They said, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him” (4:52). The seventh hour was about one o'clock in the afternoon. The same hour. The father knew it was “at the same hour” that Jesus had spoken (4:53). The healing was not luck. It was Jesus. No distance too far. Jesus was in Cana, and the boy was in Capernaum, about twenty miles away. Jesus did not need to touch him or see him. His word was enough. A whole house believed. “And he himself believed, and his whole household” (4:53). Everyone in his home trusted Jesus. The second sign. “This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee” (4:54). Both signs in Cana pointed to who Jesus is. What we learn. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He hears you when you pray, wherever you are. Sometimes He heals, and sometimes He gives strength to get through. He is always good.

The problem. The nobleman's son was “at the point of death” (4:47). Every one of us has a worse problem: “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God, who gives life.

We cannot fix it. The nobleman had rank and money, but he could not heal his son. We cannot save ourselves by being good or by trying harder. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus gives life. Jesus spoke, and the dying boy lived. Jesus also said, “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life” (John 5:24). Only Jesus can give life like that. He did not just make the boy well for a while; He offers life that never ends.

The cross and the empty tomb. To give us life, Jesus died in our place. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures… He was buried, and… He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). He took the punishment for our sin, and His empty tomb shows that the payment was enough.

The response. The nobleman believed Jesus' word before he saw his son. God's word to you is, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:31). Like the nobleman's family, you can trust Jesus today.

“So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.”
— John 4:50b (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

This verse tells what the nobleman did right after Jesus promised, “Go your way; your son lives.” “So the man believed”: he trusted Jesus completely. “The word that Jesus spoke to him”: he had nothing to see yet, only a promise, and Jesus' word was enough for him. “And he went his way”: his faith showed in what he did. He did not stay and argue, and he did not keep begging Jesus to come. He turned around and started home. This is what it means to trust Jesus. We have Jesus' words in the Bible. He promises to forgive everyone who comes to Him, to never leave us, and to give us life that lasts forever. We cannot see all of that yet, but we can believe it. When you learn this verse, think of one promise of Jesus you can trust this week. Then live like it is true, the way the father walked home believing. You may not see the answer right away, but Jesus' word never fails.
