ZzzTHE ENEMYMATTHEW 13:25“while men slept, his enemy came”MATTHEW 13:28“An enemy hasdone this.”While everyone slept, an enemy sowed weeds in the good field.

The sower. Jesus Himself tells us who the farmer is: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man” (13:37). Son of Man was the name Jesus liked to use for Himself. Only good seed. The farmer “sowed good seed in his field” (13:24). Everything God makes and plants is good. God never plants evil. An enemy. The servants asked, “Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?” (13:27). The answer was, “An enemy has done this” (13:28). Later Jesus said, “The enemy who sowed them is the devil” (13:39). At night. The enemy came “while men slept” (13:25). The devil works in sneaky ways. He likes darkness, lies and hiding. Look-alikes. The tares were most likely a weed that looks very much like wheat while it is young. The tares showed only when the grain began to form (13:26). Evil often looks harmless at first. Why the world has evil. Sin, cruelty and sadness are real. They do not come from God. They come from the enemy and from people who follow him. What we learn. Jesus is stronger than the enemy. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). Stay close to Jesus, and ask Him to keep your heart full of His good seed.

THE OWNERSERVANTSMATTHEW 13:28“Do you want us thento go and gather them up?”MATTHEW 13:30“Let both grow togetheruntil the harvest”The owner said to let the wheat and the weeds grow until harvest.

The servants' idea. “Do you want us then to go and gather them up?” (13:28). It sounded like a good plan: get rid of the bad and keep the good. The owner's answer. “No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them” (13:29). The roots of the wheat and the weeds were most likely tangled together. Pulling one would tear up the other. Let both grow. “Let both grow together until the harvest” (13:30). For now, people who love God and people who do evil live side by side in the same world. God is patient. Why does God not stop all evil today? One reason is His patience. “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Longsuffering means patient for a long time. The harvest is coming. God's patience does not mean He has forgotten. There will be a time of harvest (13:30). On that day the owner, not the servants, will do the sorting. What we learn. It is not our job to decide who is wheat and who is a weed. Our job is to grow, to love people and to tell them about Jesus while there is time.

MATTHEW 13:36“Explain to us the parableof the tares of the field.”MATTHEW 13:38“The fieldis the world”In the house, Jesus explained what every part of the story meant.

A good question. After the crowd left, the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field” (13:36). Jesus did not send them away. He explained every part. The key. Jesus gave the meaning of each piece (13:37-39). The sower is the Son of Man. The field is the world. The good seeds are the sons of the kingdom. The tares are the sons of the wicked one. The enemy is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age. The reapers are the angels. The field is the world. The story is about the whole world, not one town or one country. Everyone on earth is in this field. Two families. Jesus said some people are “the sons of the kingdom” and some are “the sons of the wicked one” (13:38). Every person belongs to one family or the other. A new family. In a real field, a weed can never become wheat. But Jesus can make a person new. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). What we learn. Bring your questions to Jesus, the way the disciples did. Read His Word and pray. And make sure you belong to His family by trusting Him.

THE HARVESTMATTHEW 13:39“the harvest isthe end of the age”MATTHEW 13:43“the righteous will shineforth as the sun”At the harvest, the angels gather the wheat into the barn.

The end of the age. “The harvest is the end of the age” (13:39). History is not going around in circles. It is moving toward a day when Jesus will set everything right. The Judge. “The Son of Man will send out His angels” (13:41). The same Jesus who sowed the good seed will be the Judge at the harvest. Evil removed. The angels “will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness” (13:41). Lawlessness means living as if God's rules do not matter. Nothing evil will be left in God's kingdom. A real warning. Jesus said the angels “will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth” (13:42). Jesus spoke plainly because He loves people. A warning is a kindness when the danger is real. No one knows the day. Jesus taught that no one knows the day or the hour of His return except the Father (Matthew 24:36). Our part is not to guess the date but to be ready. The righteous will shine. “Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (13:43). The righteous are people God has made right with Himself through Jesus. What we learn. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (13:43). Jesus is inviting you to listen and come to Him today. Everyone who trusts Him will shine in His Father's kingdom.

The Gospel Connection
☆

The problem. Jesus said a harvest is coming at “the end of the age” (13:39), and on that day everything that offends will be removed from His kingdom (13:41). That is bad news for all of us on our own, because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

We cannot fix it. A weed cannot turn itself into wheat. In the same way, we cannot make ourselves right with God by being good or by trying harder. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus came to save. The Son of Man who will judge the world first came to rescue it. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17).

The cross and the empty tomb. Jesus took our sin on Himself. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures… He was buried, and… He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

The response. That is how a sinner becomes one of the righteous who will shine (13:43). “He who believes in Him is not condemned” (John 3:18). Turn from your sin and trust Jesus today, because “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

“Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”
— Matthew 13:43a (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Jesus spoke these words right after He warned about the harvest at the end of the age. “Then”: after all evil has been taken away, something wonderful happens. “The righteous”: these are people who are right with God. No one is righteous by being good enough. God makes people righteous when they trust Jesus, who took their sin on the cross. “Will shine forth as the sun”: God's people will be full of His light and glory, bright like the sun on a clear morning. “In the kingdom of their Father”: they will be home with God, and He will be their Father forever. This verse is a promise for everyone who belongs to Jesus. The harvest is not something God's children need to dread. It is the day they will finally shine. As you learn this verse, thank God for making you His child through Jesus. If you have not trusted Jesus yet, you can do it today, and this promise can be yours.
