LUKE 19:3“he sought to seewho Jesus was”LUKE 19:4“climbed up intoa sycamore tree”Zacchaeus ran ahead of the crowd to see Jesus.

On the way. Jesus had told His disciples, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem” (Luke 18:31). On the way, “Jesus entered and passed through Jericho” (19:1). Who he was. “There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich” (19:2). A tax collector gathered tax money from people. Chief means he was probably over other tax collectors. What he wanted. “And he sought to see who Jesus was” (19:3). Sought means he tried hard to find something. Zacchaeus wanted to know who Jesus really was. In the way. He “could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature” (19:3). Short stature means he was a short man. A crowd of people stood between him and Jesus. He did not give up. “So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way” (19:4). He went to the place where Jesus would come. More than money. Zacchaeus had money and an important job. Still, he was looking for Jesus. Riches can buy many things, but they cannot make a person right with God. Someone else was looking too. Zacchaeus climbed up to see Jesus. He did not know yet that Jesus was about to look up and see him (19:5). What this means for you. Things may seem to stand between you and Jesus: feeling too small, being too busy, or other people. Do what Zacchaeus did. Go where Jesus can be found. Read about Him in the Bible, talk to Him in prayer and learn about Him with His people.

LUKE 19:5“Zacchaeus, make hasteand come down”LUKE 19:5“today I must stayat your house”Jesus looked up and called Zacchaeus by name.

He looked up. “And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him” (19:5). Zacchaeus climbed up to see Jesus, but Jesus was the One who saw him. By name. Jesus said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down.” Make haste means hurry. Jesus called him by his own name. Today. “For today I must stay at your house.” Jesus did not say next week or someday. He said today. I must. Jesus did not just say He would like to come. He said, “I must.” Going to Zacchaeus' house was part of God's plan. It was the reason Jesus came (19:10). Jesus chose him. Zacchaeus did not invite Jesus. Jesus invited Himself. God's love always makes the first move. Received Him joyfully. “So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully” (19:6). Jesus said hurry, and Zacchaeus hurried. He welcomed Jesus into his home with joy. Known by name. Jesus knows you by name too. He said the good shepherd “calls his own sheep by name and leads them out” (John 10:3). What this means for you. Jesus wants to be close to you today. When He speaks to your heart through His Word, answer the way Zacchaeus did: quickly and gladly.

LUKE 19:6“received Himjoyfully”LUKE 19:7“a guest with a manwho is a sinner”Jesus went to Zacchaeus' house, and the crowd complained.

They all complained. “But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, ‘He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner’” (19:7). The crowd did not like where Jesus was going. What a sinner is. A sinner is a person who does wrong against God. Sin is anything we think, say or do that goes against God's ways. True of everyone. The crowd called Zacchaeus a sinner. But God's Word says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Every person in that crowd was a sinner too. A guest. Jesus was not ashamed to stay with Zacchaeus. Being close to a sinner did not make Jesus sinful. Jesus makes sinners new. Why He came. Jesus once said, “I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Mark 2:17). Repentance means turning away from sin and back to God. Love that comes close. God did not wait for us to become good. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). What this means for you. Jesus is not waiting for you to be good enough before He comes close. And when someone else seems like the worst sinner around, remember that Jesus came for that person too. Be kind to the people others leave out.

LUKE 19:8“I give half of mygoods to the poor”LUKE 19:9“Today salvation hascome to this house”Salvation came to Zacchaeus' house that day.

Zacchaeus stood. “Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold’” (19:8). He called Jesus Lord. Fourfold. Fourfold means four times as much. For every coin he might have taken wrongly, he would give back four. Not to earn it. Zacchaeus did not do this to get Jesus to come to his house. Jesus had already come. His giving was his answer to Jesus, not a payment. Today salvation. Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham” (19:9). Salvation came into the house when Jesus, the Savior, came into it. A son of Abraham. Zacchaeus was one of Abraham's people, the family God had made promises to. Jesus said he also was a son of Abraham, and now he trusted God as Abraham did, who “believed in the Lord” (Genesis 15:6). Why Jesus came. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (19:10). Son of Man is a name Jesus used for Himself. Lost means far from God and unable to find the way back alone. Two rich men. In Luke 18 a rich ruler “became very sorrowful” (Luke 18:23). Zacchaeus received Jesus “joyfully” (19:6). What this means for you. You cannot earn God's love by being generous, and you do not have to. Jesus comes to you first. When He changes your heart, you will want to make things right and to give.

The problem. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Like Zacchaeus, every one of us needs to be forgiven. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Our efforts fail. Zacchaeus' money could not buy salvation, and giving it away could not pay for his sin either. Being good, going to church or trying harder cannot pay for ours. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus came. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).

The cross and the empty tomb. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

The response. Jesus calls you by name, just as He called Zacchaeus. Turn from your sin and receive Him. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). Then, like Zacchaeus, you will want to live in a new way. Everyone who trusts Him can know they belong to God.

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
— Luke 19:10 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Jesus said these words at Zacchaeus' house. “The Son of Man” is a name Jesus used for Himself. “Has come” means He came on purpose, from His Father, to do a job. “To seek” means to look for. Jesus came looking for people, just as He stopped under Zacchaeus' tree and called his name. “And to save” means to rescue. Jesus does not only find people; He brings them back to God. He did that by dying on the cross for our sins and rising again. “That which was lost” means people who are far from God and cannot find the way back on their own. That is all of us, even people who look like they have everything together. Say this verse when you feel far from God, or when you think you are too bad for Him to want you. Jesus came looking for people like Zacchaeus, and He came looking for you. You can answer Him the way Zacchaeus did: come quickly and receive Him gladly.
