JOHN 20:25“We have seenthe Lord.”JOHN 20:25“Unless I see in His handsthe print of the nails,”The other disciples told Thomas, “We have seen the Lord.”

That first evening. On the day Jesus rose, His disciples met behind shut doors “for fear of the Jews.” Then “Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (John 20:19). They were most likely afraid of the leaders who had handed Jesus over. Glad. “He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord” (20:20). One was missing. “Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came” (20:24). He missed that first meeting with the risen Lord. Loyal Thomas. Thomas was no coward. Once, when going back to Judea was dangerous, he told the others, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him” (John 11:16). Good news. The other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord” (20:25). That morning Mary Magdalene had brought them the same news (20:18). Unless I see. Thomas answered, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe” (20:25). An honest answer. Thomas knew Jesus had been nailed to a cross. He was most likely full of sorrow. He did not pretend to believe. He said plainly what he needed. The same proof. Thomas was not asking for more than the others had been given. Jesus had already shown them His hands and His side (20:20). What this means for you. Thomas missed a meeting with Jesus, but Jesus did not forget him. If you have questions about Jesus, you do not need to hide them. Bring them to Him, and stay close to people who love Him.

JOHN 20:26“the doors being shut, and stood in the midst,”JOHN 20:26“Peace to you!”After eight days Jesus came and stood in the midst of them.

A long week. “And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them” (20:26). For a whole week the others knew Jesus was alive, and Thomas still could not believe it. Thomas stayed. Thomas did not walk away from his friends. He was with them when Jesus came again. That was a good place to be. Shut doors. “Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, ‘Peace to you!’” (20:26). Shut doors could not keep the risen Lord out. The same kind words. He spoke the same greeting of peace He had spoken the week before (20:19, 21). He began with kindness and peace. Words for one. The others already believed. After His greeting, Jesus' first words were for Thomas: “Then He said to Thomas” (20:27). A patient Lord. Jesus came again, and this time He spoke straight to Thomas. He even called him by name: “Thomas” (20:29). A real body. The risen Jesus was not a ghost. He came in while the doors were shut, and He also had a real body with real hands and a real side. What this means for you. Jesus does not give up on people who struggle to believe. Stay with God's people, keep listening to His Word, and trust that He will meet you.

JOHN 20:27“Reach your finger here, and look at My hands;”JOHN 20:27“Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”Jesus said to Thomas, “Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

His own words. “Then He said to Thomas, ‘Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side’” (20:27). He knew. Thomas had said finger, hands and side (20:25). Jesus said finger, hands and side. Jesus knew exactly what Thomas had said. The marks. The nails had gone through His hands. At the cross “one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear” (John 19:34). The marks were still there. Really Jesus. The marks showed that the living Lord was the same Jesus who had died. God had raised Him from the dead in His own body. Believe. “Do not be unbelieving, but believing” (20:27). Jesus was not pushing Thomas away. He was calling him to trust. Grace. Jesus offered Thomas exactly what he had asked for. He met him where he was, with patience and kindness. Marks of love. Those marks came from the cross, where Jesus suffered for our sins. They show how much He loves us. What this means for you. Jesus knows every word you say and every question you have. He is patient with you. He calls you to stop doubting and to trust Him.

JOHN 20:28“My Lord andmy God!”JOHN 20:29“Blessed are those whohave not seen and yethave believed.”Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

Thomas answered. “And Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (20:28). Thomas spoke these words to Jesus. My Lord. Thomas called Jesus Lord. A lord is a master, the one you follow and obey. Thomas said “My Lord,” so Jesus was his own Master. My God. Thomas also called Jesus God. Jesus is the Son of God, and He is God the Son. Jesus accepted it. Jesus did not correct Thomas or tell him to stop. He welcomed Thomas' faith. Because you have seen. “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed” (20:29). Thomas believed when he saw the risen Lord. A blessing for you. “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (20:29). This is our memory verse. Blessed means truly happy because God is with you and is good to you. Written for you. John wrote that “these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (20:31). What this means for you. You have never seen Jesus with your eyes, but you can know Him and trust Him. You can say to Him what Thomas said: “My Lord and my God!”

The problem. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Every one of us has disobeyed God, and sin keeps us away from Him.

Not by trying. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation is a gift, not a prize we earn.

The marks of the cross. The prints of the nails in Jesus' hands show what He suffered for us. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). He took the punishment we deserve.

Alive. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Thomas saw Him alive, and Jesus showed him the marks in His hands.

Your response. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Thomas called Jesus his Lord. You can too.

Belonging. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). If you trust Jesus, you can know you belong to God. He will never turn you away.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
— John 20:29b (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Jesus spoke these words to Thomas one week after He rose from the dead. Thomas had believed because he saw Jesus with his own eyes. Then Jesus spoke about everyone who would come later. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Blessed means truly happy because God is with you and has been kind to you. Jesus was talking about people who would never see His hands or hear His voice in a room. That includes you! You have never seen Jesus with your eyes, but you can still believe in Him. How? God gave us His Word so that we can know Him. When you trust Jesus, you are not missing out. Jesus Himself calls you blessed. Jesus was patient with Thomas, and He is patient with you too. He died for our sins and rose again, and He is alive today. Say this verse when you wish you could see Jesus. He sees you, He knows you, and He is with you.
