GOD SENT THE SPIES TO RAHAB · 2:1-7JOSHUA 2:1“Go, view the land, especially Jericho”JOSHUA 2:6“she had brought themup to the roof”Joshua sent two spies, and Rahab took them in.

A secret mission. Joshua “sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly” (2:1). Forty years before, Moses had sent out twelve spies, and ten of them came back afraid (Numbers 13). Joshua had been one of the two who trusted God. Rahab’s house. The spies “came to the house of a harlot named Rahab” (2:1). A harlot (the ICB says prostitute) was a woman who took money from men to do things God made only for marriage. The Bible says it plainly. Rahab was a sinner, and everyone in Jericho knew it. God knew her. Out of a whole city, God led the spies to the one house where someone was ready to trust Him. Jesus said He came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). God was seeking Rahab. Brave, but not perfect. Rahab hid the men “with the stalks of flax” on her roof (2:6). That was brave. But she told the king’s men, “I did not know where they were from” (2:4), and that was not true. God’s law says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16). Hebrews praises Rahab for her faith, not for her lie (Hebrews 11:31). Taking a side. When Rahab hid the spies, she was choosing the Lord and His people over her own king. That was a dangerous choice. What this means for you. Nobody is too far gone for God to find. He knows your name, and He comes looking for you.

RAHAB HEARD AND BELIEVED · 2:8-11JOSHUA 2:9“I know that the Lordhas given you the land”JOSHUA 2:11“He is God in heaven aboveand on earth beneath”On the roof at night, Rahab said the Lord is the true God.

On the roof at night. Before the spies went to sleep, Rahab came up to them on the roof (2:8). She had something important to say. “I know.” Rahab began, “I know that the Lord has given you the land” (2:9). She did not just hope it might be true. She was sure. What she heard. “For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt” (2:10). That had happened forty years before, and Jericho was still talking about it. They had also heard about Sihon and Og, two Amorite kings Israel defeated (Numbers 21). Melting hearts. “And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted” (2:11). The whole city heard the news and was terrified. Fear or faith. The same news made Jericho shut its gate, but it made Rahab open her door. She said, “For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath” (2:11). That is faith. Faith comes by hearing. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). What this means for you. You have heard about the greatest thing God ever did: Jesus died for our sins and rose again. You can do what Rahab did and trust the Lord.

A PROMISE OF KINDNESS · 2:12-14JOSHUA 2:12“swear to meby the Lord”JOSHUA 2:14“Our livesfor yours”Rahab asked the spies to save her whole family.

Swear by the Lord. Rahab said, “Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord” (2:12). She wanted a promise made in the name of the God she now trusted. Kindness for kindness. “Since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house” (2:12). The word for kindness here means loyal love, the kind that keeps its promises. A true token. She asked them to “give me a true token” (2:12). A token is a sign or proof. Soon the scarlet cord would be that sign. Her whole family. “Spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death” (2:13). Rahab knew God was going to judge Jericho. She wanted everyone she loved to be saved. Our lives for yours. The spies answered, “Our lives for yours” (2:14). They promised to “deal kindly and truly” with her. They put their own lives on the line. God’s kindness. “The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy” (Psalm 103:8). God was being kind to Rahab before she ever asked. What this means for you. Like Rahab, you can pray for your family and friends to be saved. God loves to answer that prayer.

THE SCARLET CORD · 2:15-24JOSHUA 2:21“she bound the scarletcord in the window”Rahab tied the scarlet cord, and the spies went to the hills.

Down the wall. “Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall” (2:15). Wise advice. Rahab told them, “Get to the mountain… Hide there three days” (2:16). She knew the king’s men were searching down by the river. The scarlet cord. The spies said she must “bind this line of scarlet cord in the window” (2:18). Scarlet is a deep red. The cord would show Israel which house to spare. Safe inside. Her family had to gather in her house. Anyone who went “outside the doors of your house into the street” would not be protected (2:19). Safety was found only inside. Right away. “Then she said, ‘According to your words, so be it.’ And she sent them away… And she bound the scarlet cord in the window” (2:21). She did not wait for the army to come. Real faith acts. Good news for Joshua. The spies came back and said, “Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands” (2:24). A picture of Jesus. Many Christians see the scarlet cord as a picture of the blood of Jesus. On the night of the first Passover, God said, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you” (Exodus 12:13). What this means for you. Rahab trusted the sign she was given. You can trust Jesus, who gave His life for you.

The problem. Rahab was a sinner, and Jericho was a city under God’s judgment. But Rahab was not the only sinner. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Walls cannot save. Jericho trusted its high walls and its king. Rahab could not save herself either; she could not undo her past. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Savior from Rahab’s family. Rahab married an Israelite named Salmon, and their son was Boaz (Matthew 1:5). Many years later Jesus was born into that same family line. Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

The cross and the empty tomb. Rahab was saved under a scarlet cord. We are saved by the blood of Jesus. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures… He was buried, and… He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). We were redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:19).

The response. “By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe” (Hebrews 11:31). God offers you the same rescue. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

“For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.”
— Joshua 2:11 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

Rahab spoke these words to the two spies on her roof in Jericho. She had grown up among people who worshiped many false gods. Now she said something brand new. “For the Lord your God”: the God of Israel, the God who had dried up the Red Sea. “He is God”: not one god among many, but the only true God. “In heaven above”: He rules the sky, the stars and everything beyond them. “And on earth beneath”: He also rules every land, every city and every king, even the king of Jericho. That is why Rahab trusted Him instead of her city’s walls. This verse also shows how faith grows. Rahab heard what God had done, and she believed what it showed about Him. You have heard what God did when Jesus died and rose again. Say this verse when you feel small or afraid. The God who rules heaven and earth knows your name, and He is strong enough to save anyone who trusts Him.
