THE LORD HAS GIVEN · 6:1-5JOSHUA 6:1“Jericho wassecurely shut up”JOSHUA 6:2“See! I have givenJericho into your hand”Jericho was shut tight, but God had already given the city to Joshua.

Shut up tight. “Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in” (6:1). The people of Jericho had heard about God for forty years. Rahab said, “For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you” (2:10). They locked their gates instead of turning to God. Already given. “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor” (6:2). God spoke as if the battle were already over. When God promises, it is as good as done. Before the plan. Just before this, Joshua met the “Commander of the army of the Lord” and “fell on his face to the earth and worshiped” (5:14). Joshua bowed first. Then God gave him the plan. A strange plan. March around the city once a day for six days. On the seventh day march around seven times, blow the trumpets and shout (6:3-5). No ladders, no battering rams, no tunnels. Why this way? God wanted everyone to know that He gave the victory. “The foolishness of God is wiser than men” (1 Corinthians 1:25). What this means for you. God's plans do not always make sense to us at first. Trust His Word, and do what He says, even when you cannot see how it will work.

MARCH AND KEEP QUIET · 6:6-14JOSHUA 6:4“seven trumpetsof rams’ horns”JOSHUA 6:10“You shall not shoutor make any noise”Day after day, God's people marched around Jericho without a word.

The ark in the middle. Armed men went first, then seven priests with trumpets, then “the ark of the covenant of the Lord” (6:8), then the rear guard. God's presence was at the center of the march. Trumpets of rams' horns. The priests blew “seven trumpets of rams' horns” (6:6). These were not band instruments. They were the horns used to call God's people together and to announce that God was acting. Not one word. “You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’” (6:10). No grumbling, no bragging and no arguing. Day after day. “So they did six days” (6:14). Each day they marched, went home and saw no change. Obedience meant doing the same thing again tomorrow. Early risers. “And Joshua rose early in the morning” (6:12). Joshua did not drag his feet. He was eager to obey. What this means for you. Sometimes obeying God means waiting and keeping quiet. “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14). Keep doing what God says, even before you see the answer.

THE WALLS FELL DOWN · 6:15-21JOSHUA 6:20“the wall felldown flat”HEBREWS 11:30“By faith the wallsof Jericho fell down”The priests blew the trumpets, the people shouted, and God brought the wall down.

The shout. “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!” (6:16). They shouted before the walls moved. It was a shout of faith. Flat. “The wall fell down flat” (6:20). No army pushed it. God brought it down. “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days” (Hebrews 11:30). Given to the Lord. “The city shall be doomed by the Lord to destruction” (6:17). Everything in Jericho was handed over to God. The silver and gold went into “the treasury of the Lord” (6:19). A just Judge. The people of Jericho died in the battle (6:21). Their nations had done terrible evil for hundreds of years. God had told Abraham long before that He would wait until their sin was full (Genesis 15:16). God is patient, “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Only for then. This was God's judgment at one time and place. Jesus does not send His followers to fight for Him with swords (John 18:36). A warning. Israel was told not to take anything for themselves (6:18). The next lesson shows what happened when one man did. What this means for you. God takes sin seriously, and He is always fair. Run to Him for mercy, as Rahab did.

RAHAB SAVED · 6:22-26JOSHUA 6:22“bring out the womanand all that she has”JOSHUA 6:25“she dwells in Israelto this day”The spies kept their promise and brought Rahab's whole family out safely.

A promise kept. Joshua told the spies, “Go into the harlot's house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her” (6:22). The spies had promised to save her (2:14), and Israel kept its word. The whole family. They “brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had” (6:23). Rahab's faith brought her family under God's protection. Who Rahab was. Rahab is called “the harlot” (6:25), a woman who had lived a sinful life. She was also a Canaanite. Yet God saved her. Saved by faith. “By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe” (Hebrews 11:31). Her faith was real, and it showed in what she did. Part of God's people. “So she dwells in Israel to this day” (6:25). The outsider became family. In Jesus' family tree. “Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab” (Matthew 1:5). Rahab became the great-great-grandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus. A city left in ruins. Joshua warned that anyone who rebuilt Jericho would be cursed (6:26). The ruins would remind everyone of what God had done. What this means for you. No one is too far from God to be saved. Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

The Gospel Connection

The problem. Jericho trusted its walls, but walls could not save it from God's judgment. Sin is serious to God: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Our walls fail. People still build walls to feel safe: being good, being busy, being popular. None of them can take away sin. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Saved by faith. Rahab trusted the Lord, and she was spared. “By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe” (Hebrews 11:31). She did not hide behind the walls. She hid the spies and put her trust in the God of Israel. Her family line led to Jesus (Matthew 1:5).

The judgment Jesus took. Jesus never sinned, yet He took our judgment on the cross. “He was wounded for our transgressions” (Isaiah 53:5). “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,” and “He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

The response. “Behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Like Rahab, run to God before it is too late.

“See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.”
— Joshua 6:2 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

The Lord spoke these words to Joshua outside the shut gates of Jericho, before Israel marched even once. “See!”: God wanted Joshua to look at things the way God saw them, not the way they looked from outside the wall. “I have given”: God spoke as if it had already happened. When God makes a promise, it is as sure as if it were done. “Jericho into your hand”: the strongest city in the land was put under Joshua's control by God. “Its king, and the mighty men of valor”: valor means bravery in battle. Jericho's king and its toughest soldiers were no match for God. Joshua still had to obey and march, but the victory was the Lord's. You face walls too: fears, hard tests or sins you cannot beat on your own. Jesus has already won the biggest battle by dying and rising again. He said, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Say this verse when something looks too big, and remember that nothing is too big for God.
