GOD'S PLAN IN HARD TIMES · 13:1-5JUDGES 13:3“you shall conceiveand bear a son”JUDGES 13:5“a Nazirite to Godfrom the womb”The Angel of the Lord brought good news to Manoah's wife.

Again. “Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord” (13:1). Judges says these sad words again and again (3:7; 4:1; 6:1). Israel kept falling into the same sin. Forty years. The Philistines ruled Israel for forty years. That was longer than any enemy before them in Judges. Still loved. Israel did not deserve help, but God began a rescue anyway. That is grace: kindness we do not earn. A woman with no children. Manoah's wife “was barren and had no children” (13:2). Barren means not able to have a baby. In Bible times this brought great sadness. Good news for her. “And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman” (13:3). He came to her first, with good news. A son promised. “You shall conceive and bear a son” (13:3). Conceive means a baby begins to grow inside. God once asked Sarah's husband, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14). Given to God. “The child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb” (13:5). A Nazirite was a person set apart to belong to God in a special way. Only a beginning. “He shall begin to deliver Israel” (13:5). Samson would only begin the rescue. A greater Rescuer would one day finish it. What this means for you. God's plans start before we can see them. He knew Samson before Samson was born, and He knows you too.

A FATHER WHO PRAYED · 13:6-14JUDGES 13:8“teach us what weshall do for the child”JUDGES 13:9“God listened tothe voice of Manoah”Manoah prayed for help to raise the boy, and God listened.

Good news shared. “So the woman came and told her husband” (13:6). She said the visitor's “countenance was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome.” Countenance means face or look. A father's prayer. “Then Manoah prayed to the Lord” (13:8). He asked God to “teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.” Faith in the prayer. Manoah did not say, if a child is born. He spoke of “the child who will be born.” He believed God's promise. God listened. “And God listened to the voice of Manoah” (13:9). The Angel came again. The same Man. Manoah asked, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?” He answered that He was (13:11). The rule of life. Manoah asked, “What will be the boy's rule of life, and his work?” (13:12). Rule of life means the way he should live. Be careful. The Angel said, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful” (13:13). Even before Samson was born, his mother kept the Nazirite rules. Ask for wisdom. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Manoah did exactly that. What this means for you. God loves it when parents ask Him how to raise their children. You can pray for your family, and you can ask God how He wants you to live.

HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL · 13:15-18JUDGES 13:18“seeing it iswonderful”ISAIAH 9:6“His name will becalled Wonderful”Manoah asked the visitor's name. It was wonderful.

A kind welcome. “Please let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You” (13:15). Detain means ask someone to stay. Worship God. “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord” (13:16). The Angel pointed Manoah to God. Not knowing yet. “For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord” (13:16). What is Your name? Manoah asked so “that when Your words come to pass we may honor You” (13:17). Wonderful. “Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?” (13:18). Wonderful here means too amazing to understand, something only God can be. The same word. Isaiah promised a Child: “And His name will be called Wonderful” (Isaiah 9:6). That Child is Jesus. Who was the Angel? Many Christians see the Angel of the Lord as the Son of God appearing long before He was born in Bethlehem. Manoah later said, “we have seen God” (13:22). Thoughts higher than ours. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord (Isaiah 55:8). What this means for you. Jesus is more wonderful than we can understand, but He came close so that we could know Him and love Him.

FIRE ON THE ROCK · 13:19-25JUDGES 13:20“ascended in theflame of the altar”JUDGES 13:24“the Lordblessed him”The Angel went up in the flame, and Manoah and his wife bowed low.

A wondrous thing. Manoah offered the goat and grain “upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing” (13:19). Up in the flame. “The Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar!” (13:20). Ascended means went up. Faces down. Manoah and his wife “fell on their faces to the ground” (13:20). Afraid. “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!” (13:22). Manoah knew God is holy, and sinners cannot stand before Him. Wise faith. His wife answered, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands” (13:23). What God had done showed His kind heart. The boy is born. “So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him” (13:24). The Spirit. “And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him” (13:25). Samson's strength would come from God's Spirit. A picture. Many Christians see a picture of Jesus here. He “offered Himself without spot to God” (Hebrews 9:14), and then He went up to heaven. What this means for you. God accepted Jesus' sacrifice. Everyone who trusts Jesus can be sure that God is for them, not against them.

The Gospel Connection
☆

The problem. “Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord” (13:1). We do the same. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is not just doing wrong things. It is turning away from God, again and again.

Not even Samson. Samson was set apart from birth and filled with God's Spirit, yet he would only “begin to deliver Israel” (13:5), and he would sin many times. No hero, rule or vow can make us clean. God saves us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5).

A greater birth. Many years later an angel spoke to Joseph about Mary's baby: “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). He is the Child whose name is “Wonderful” (Isaiah 9:6).

The cross and the empty tomb. Jesus “offered Himself without spot to God” (Hebrews 9:14). He died for our sins, was buried, and “rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). God accepted His offering, just as He accepted Manoah's.

Your response. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Trust Jesus, the Rescuer who finishes what Samson only began.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
— Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
💡 What This Verse Means

God spoke these words through the prophet Jeremiah to His people who had been taken away to Babylon. They were far from home, and they would stay there for seventy years. God told them to build houses, plant gardens and pray, because He had not forgotten them. “I know the thoughts that I think toward you”: God was thinking about His people all the time. “Thoughts of peace and not of evil”: His plans for them were good, even when life was hard. “To give you a future and a hope”: one day He would bring them home. God thought about Samson before Samson was born, too. This promise was first for Israel, but the Bible says “all the promises of God in Him are Yes” (2 Corinthians 1:20). In Jesus, God's good thoughts are for everyone who trusts Him. That does not mean life will always be easy. It means God is never against you. When you are worried about the future, say this verse and remember that God is already there.
