The Battle Is the Lord’s

ISRAELPHILISTINESONE MAN FOUGHT, AND EVERYONE WON1 SAMUEL 17:9“then we will be your servants”Two armies watched. One man fought for everyone.

Something unusual happens in 1 Samuel 17. Two whole armies come out for a battle, and then almost nobody fights.

A different kind of fight. Goliath said, “Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me” (1 Samuel 17:8). One man would fight for each side.

Everything on one man. “If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants” (17:9). Prevail means win.

A champion. The Bible calls Goliath a champion (17:4). A champion did not fight just for himself. He fought for his whole people. What happened to him happened to them.

Nobody went. For forty days no one from Israel would go down into the valley. Everyone knew how much rested on that one fight.

David went. When David walked into the valley, he was not a brave boy having a big day. He was carrying the whole nation. If he lost, all Israel would become slaves.

The win was shared. When Goliath fell, “the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines” (17:52). They ran through a victory they had not fought for.

Our story too. The Bible tells us that our story works the same way. Adam was the first man, and he sinned. “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin” (Romans 5:12).

One for many. Jesus is the one Man who came to undo that: “by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). Righteous means right with God.

Adam and Jesus. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22). Everyone who belongs to Jesus shares in what He did.

Our Champion. The angel said of Jesus, “He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Jesus went out alone for us, like David went out for Israel.

We just watched. Israel added nothing to David's win. We add nothing to Jesus' win either. Salvation is a gift we receive by trusting Him.

Not the strongest. Israel's champion was not the tallest or the oldest. He was a shepherd boy who trusted God. God chose the champion nobody expected.

What we learn. You do not have to beat sin by yourself. Jesus fought for you, and He won.

What to do. Thank Jesus today for fighting the battle you could never win. Tell one person what He did.

What It Means That the Battle Belongs to God
☐
THE BATTLE BELONGS TO GOD1 CORINTHIANS 15:57“who gives us thevictory”ROMANS 8:31“If God is for us,who can be against us?”

Before David threw anything, he told everyone who was really about to win. He said the battle belongs to the Lord.

Not by weapons. David said the Lord would win without sword and spear (1 Samuel 17:47). The win would not come from strength, size or skill.

Then he ran. In the very next verse, “David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine” (17:48). Trusting God does not mean sitting still. It means doing your part and trusting God with the result.

God's name. David said the reason: “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (17:46). The day was about God's glory, not David's.

An old truth. At the Red Sea Moses told the people, “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14).

A king hears it too. Years later a prophet told King Jehoshaphat, “the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15). Then he said, “Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you” (2 Chronicles 20:17).

By His Spirit. “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6).

God is for us. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). The God who fought for David fights for His people.

The enemy's own weapon. David had no sword, so he used Goliath's own sword to finish the fight (17:50-51). Jesus did something like that with death.

Death defeated. Jesus died “that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14).

A public win. “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). Disarmed means took away their weapons.

More than conquerors. “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). A conqueror is someone who wins.

Stronger inside us. “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The Holy Spirit lives in everyone who trusts Jesus.

Armor that fits. Saul's armor did not fit David, but God gives His people armor that does: “Put on the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11).

What to do. When you face something hard this week, pray first. Then do your part bravely, and thank God when He helps you.
