What People See, and What God Sees
☐
WHAT PEOPLE SEE, AND WHAT GOD SEES1 SAMUEL 16:7“man looks at theoutward appearance”ACTS 10:34“God showsno partiality”People saw tall Eliab. God saw the shepherd boy on the hill.

People are quick to judge. We decide in a couple of seconds who looks friendly, who looks smart and who looks like a leader, all from the outside. Samuel did it too, and he was a prophet.

The tall son. Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” (1 Samuel 16:6). Eliab looked strong. He looked like a king.

One sentence from God. God stopped him: “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Not evil, just not the reason. God did not say good looks are bad. He said they are not what He goes by. People read the cover. God reads the whole book.

What the heart is. In the Bible, your heart is not only your feelings. It is the real you underneath: what you want, what you love and what you decide when nobody is watching.

Out of the heart. “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Diligence means great care. What you say and do comes out of your heart.

God sees it all. God's Word is “a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). Intents are the reasons behind what we do.

No favorites. Peter learned the same thing: “God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). God does not love people more because they are rich, tall, popular or good at sports.

God chooses the small. “God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27). He picked a shepherd boy nobody had called in.

Jesus too. Many people looked at Jesus and saw nothing special. “He was despised, and we did not esteem Him” (Isaiah 53:3). Esteem means to think highly of someone. People judged God's own Son by the outside.

Made with care. God made your outside too, and He made it well: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). You do not need to be ashamed of how you look.

Pure in heart. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). God cares most about what is inside.

What we learn. Judge slowly and kindly, because only God sees the whole person. Care most about the part of you that God sees.

What to do. This week, eat lunch or play with someone who is often left out. Ask God to help you see that person the way He does.

Why This Is Good News and Hard News
☐
GOOD NEWS AND HARD NEWSPSALM 51:10“Create in me aclean heart, O God”EZEKIEL 36:26“I will give youa new heart”

God looks at the heart. That is good news and hard news at the same time, and we need both halves.

The good news. God is never fooled by an unimpressive outside. If you are the youngest, the smallest or the one nobody picks, God is not reading that. He saw David when David's own father forgot to call him in (1 Samuel 16:11).

Near to the hurting. “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Contrite means sorry for sin. God sees sad hearts and comes close.

The hard news. If God sees the heart, He sees everything in it. He sees the mean thought you never said out loud and the wrong thing nobody found out about.

Not good enough. “All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Righteousness means doing what is right. Even our best good deeds cannot clean a heart.

We cannot scrub it. We spend a lot of energy taking care of our outside. But nobody can wash their own heart clean by trying harder.

God does it. God never told us to fix our hearts first and then come to Him. He said something better: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26).

His Spirit inside. “I will put My Spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:27). The Spirit who came upon David comes to live in everyone who trusts Jesus.

David's prayer. Years later David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Steadfast means steady and faithful.

What God wants. “A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). God does not turn away anyone who comes to Him sorry for sin.

Because of Jesus. Jesus died for our sins and rose again. He saves us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5).

Forgiven. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Made new. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

What to do. Bring Jesus the heart you really have. Tell Him what is wrong, thank Him for dying for you, and ask Him to make your heart new.
