Why David Would Not Lift His Hand
☐
WHY DAVID WOULD NOT LIFT HIS HAND1 SAMUEL 24:6“he is the anointedof the Lord”MATTHEW 26:52“Put your swordin its place”David took the spear and the jug, and he left Saul in God’s hands.

David gives a reason both times, and it is always the same reason. He never says, Saul might change. He never says he is afraid. He says Saul is the Lord’s anointed.

In the cave. “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord” (1 Samuel 24:6).

In the camp. “Who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?” (26:9).

What anointed means. To anoint someone was to pour oil on his head. Samuel had done it to Saul years before, to show that God had chosen him to be king (10:1).

Still God’s choice. Saul had done many wrong things since then. But the oil was not Saul’s idea, and it was not David’s to undo.

Two different things. David was not saying Saul deserved to be king. He was saying Saul was God’s to deal with. David told Saul to his face that he was wrong (24:11), and he still refused to be the one who ended his life.

Anointed too. David had been anointed himself, back in chapter 16. He knew the throne was coming. He could have said he was only speeding up what God had promised. He did not.

Not afraid of Saul. David was not holding back because he was weak. In the cave his men were ready to attack, and in the camp the whole army was asleep. He held back because he feared God.

A promise is not a shortcut. A promise from God is not permission to grab it early. God gives His gifts in His way and at His time.

Three ways it could end. “The Lord shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go out to battle and perish” (26:10). None of them was David’s hand.

Waiting is hard. David had to keep hiding for years after this. “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14).

Jesus, the Anointed One. The word anointed gives us the word Messiah, and Jesus is the Messiah. When soldiers came to arrest Him, Peter drew a sword, and Jesus said, “Put your sword in its place” (Matthew 26:52).

What this shows about God. God keeps His promises, and He does not need us to sin to make them happen.

For you. When you want something God has promised or something good, wait for His way. Do not take a shortcut that means doing wrong.

What It Means to Leave Room for God
☐
LEAVE ROOM FOR GODROMANS 12:19“Vengeance is Mine,I will repay”1 PETER 2:23“committed Himself to Himwho judges righteously”David went on his way, and Saul went home. David left it with God.

Paul wrote something that sounds like David’s whole story: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).

Give place. To give place means to step back and make room. Another way to say it is: leave room for God. You step out of the way so God can act.

Honest about the wrong. God knows when a real wrong has been done. You do not have to pretend you are fine. The settling up is God’s job, not yours.

Handing it over. You are not letting the hurt float away into nothing. You are handing it to Someone who will really deal with it.

It cost David. David slept in caves. He ate on the run. Twice he had a shortcut in his hands, and he put it down.

A sad song. When Saul finally died in battle, David did not throw a party. He wrote a sad song about Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1:17-27). That is what it looks like when someone really has left it with God.

Do good instead. Paul goes on to say that if your enemy is hungry, you should feed him (Romans 12:20). “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). David gave back Saul’s spear (26:22).

Wait on the Lord. “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7).

Jesus did it first. “Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 2:23).

Even on the cross. Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). He had every right and every power, and He handed it to His Father.

Not keeping secrets. Leaving room for God does not mean staying in danger or keeping secrets. David ran from Saul and told him plainly what he had done wrong. If someone is hurting you, tell a grown-up you trust.

Forgiven people forgive. “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).

A heart at rest. Saul spent his years chasing a grudge, and it made him miserable. David trusted God and kept a clean heart. Leaving things with God sets you free.

What this shows about God. God is the fair Judge. He sees every wrong, and He will make things right.

For you. When someone hurts you, tell a grown-up you trust, pray for the person, and leave the paying back to God.
