Paul wrote, “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20). That is a big title for ordinary people.
What is an ambassador? An ambassador is a person a king or a country sends to live in another land and speak for them. He does not speak for himself.
Sent, not self-appointed. No one makes himself an ambassador. The king chooses him and sends him. Jesus chose His followers and sent them out.
Our home country. “For our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). A citizen belongs to a country. Christians live here, but they belong to heaven's King.
A new kingdom. God “has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Colossians 1:13). Conveyed means carried over.
Part of the family. “You are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19).
Carrying the King's message. An ambassador repeats the king's words exactly. Our message is the gospel: Jesus died for our sins and rose again.
Showing the King's character. People learn about a country by watching its ambassador. In the same way, they learn about Jesus by watching His followers.
Shining lights. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Known by love. “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
Chosen to tell. “You are a chosen generation… that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
Paul's example. Paul was once an enemy of Jesus. Then Jesus forgave him and made him an ambassador. God loves to use people who know how much they have been forgiven.
What we learn. If you belong to Jesus, you are His ambassador at home, at school, on the ball field and online.
What to do. Ask yourself each morning this week, If someone watched me today, what would they learn about Jesus?
An ambassador does more than live in a faraway land. He carries a message. Paul's message was this: “We implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
God's heart. It is “as though God were pleading through us” (5:20). God is not angry and far away. He is calling people to come home.
Jesus' heart. When Jesus saw the crowds, “He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36).
Jesus' mission. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Lost means far from God.
Jesus' command. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19). A disciple is a follower and learner of Jesus.
Jesus' promise. “And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). We never go alone.
Power from the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me” (Acts 1:8). A witness tells what he has seen and knows.
Why telling matters. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). People need to hear about Jesus to believe.
Good news for everyone. “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Whoever means anyone at all.
Ready and gentle. “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Meekness means gentleness.
Pray first. Paul asked that prayers be made “for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1). Talk to God about your friends before you talk to your friends about God.
Simple ways to share. Invite a friend to church. Tell what Jesus has done for you. Offer to pray for someone who is sad. Give a Bible verse on a card.
Not alone, not pushy. You do not have to argue or force anyone. Your job is to share kindly. God is the one who changes hearts.
Even kids. You do not have to be grown up to be an ambassador. In 2 Kings 5 a young servant girl told her master's wife about God's prophet, and a great army captain was healed. God used a child's few brave words.
A letter people read. Paul told the Corinthians that they were like a letter from Christ that everyone could read (2 Corinthians 3:2-3). Your life is a letter about Jesus that your family and friends read every day.
What to do. Write the names of three friends who need Jesus. Pray for them every day this week, and ask God for one chance to be kind or to share.
