BECAUSE GOD GAVE FIRSTJOHN 3:16“He gave His onlybegotten Son”2 CORINTHIANS 8:9“for your sakesHe became poor”God gave His Son, and Jesus gave Himself for us.

Why would poor people give away what little they had? The Bible's answer is not a rule or a reward. It is a Person. Christians give because God gave first.

The greatest gift. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God is the first and greatest Giver.

Rich, then poor. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus left the glory of heaven for us.

Born in a manger. The King of heaven was born as a baby. Mary “laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).

All the way down. Jesus “humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

He came to give. Jesus said He “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). A ransom is a price paid to set someone free.

Personal. Paul wrote about Jesus, “who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Jesus did not give to a crowd only. He gave Himself for you.

Everything else too. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

Every good gift. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). Your family, your food and your friends all come from God.

It all belongs to Him. “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness” (Psalm 24:1). When we give, we are sharing what was His all along.

Love answers love. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Giving is one way love answers back.

Not to earn. We never give to make God love us more. Salvation is “the gift of God, not of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9). A gift cannot be earned.

The Macedonians understood. They had received God's grace (2 Corinthians 8:1), so “they first gave themselves to the Lord” (8:5). Their giving was a thank-you note to God.

What we learn. Every time we give, we are copying our Father. We give because He gave His Son for us.

What to do. This week, make a list of gifts God has given you. Thank Him for each one, and ask Him to show you one way to share.

A Glad and Willing Heart
☐
A GLAD AND WILLING HEART2 CORINTHIANS 9:7“God loves acheerful giver”2 CORINTHIANS 8:12“if there is firsta willing mind”A family gladly shares bread with their neighbors.

God cares about why we give and how we give, not just what we give. The Bible shows us the kind of heart God loves.

A cheerful giver. “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Decide in your heart. Purposes means plans or decides. God wants giving that you choose with your own heart, not giving you are pushed into.

A willing mind. “For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have” (2 Corinthians 8:12). God never asks you to give what you do not have.

Not for show. Jesus said, “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them” (Matthew 6:1). We give for God's eyes, not people's praise.

A secret. “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matthew 6:3). Quiet giving keeps our hearts humble.

God sees. “Your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4). God notices every quiet act of love.

Treasure in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). What we treasure shows what we love.

One Master. Jesus said, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). Mammon means money and things. Generous hands show that God is our Master.

Content. “Now godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6). Contentment means being thankful for what you have.

Trust. “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Givers can trust God to take care of them.

As to the Lord. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). Even sharing a snack can be done for Jesus.

No grumbling. “Do all things without complaining and disputing” (Philippians 2:14). That includes sharing with your brother or sister!

What we learn. God does not need our money. He wants our hearts. A small gift given gladly pleases Him more than a big gift given grumpily.

What to do. Next time you share, do it quietly and happily, just for Jesus. Ask Him to make you a cheerful giver.
