When God Takes the Long Way
☐
“GOD LED THE PEOPLE AROUND” · EXODUS 13:18PROVERBS 3:5-6“Trust in the Lord with all yourheart… He shall direct your paths”ISAIAH 55:8“For My thoughts are not yourthoughts, Nor are your ways My ways”“ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD” · ROMANS 8:28God's way is best, even when it is long.

When Israel left Egypt, there was a short road to the promised land. But God did not lead them that way. “God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near” (Exodus 13:17).

God had a reason. God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt” (Exodus 13:17). The short road went past strong armies. God knew His people were not ready.

God knows us. God knew what the people could handle. He knew their fears before they did. He knows ours too. Nothing about you surprises Him.

The long way was the safe way. “So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea” (Exodus 13:18). It looked slower, but it was better.

God's ways are higher. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord (Isaiah 55:8). Sometimes we do not understand why God does what He does. We can still trust Him.

Trust instead of figuring it out. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

When things take longer. Maybe you are waiting for something: to feel better, to make a friend, for a hard time at home to end. Waiting is hard. But God is not lost, and He is not late.

God works it for good. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Even the long way is part of God's good plan.

Paths we have not known. God promises, “I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known” (Isaiah 42:16). We do not need to know the whole road. God does.

Joseph waited too. Joseph asked for his bones to go to the promised land. It took hundreds of years. But Moses carried them out (Exodus 13:19). God remembered.

Not a punishment. The long way was not God being mean. It was God being kind. He was protecting His people from something they were not ready for.

What to do. Think of something you are waiting for. Pray, “God, I trust Your way, even if it is the long way.”

A helping thought. When you feel stuck, remember Israel in the desert. They could not see the end of the road, but God could, and He was walking with them every step.

The Light That Goes Before Us
☐
“A PILLAR OF FIRE TO GIVE THEM LIGHT” · EXODUS 13:21JOHN 8:12“I am the light of the world. Hewho follows Me shall not walk in darkness”PSALM 119:105“Your word is a lampto my feet”“HE IS THE ONE WHO GOES BEFORE YOU” · DEUTERONOMY 31:8Jesus is our light, and He goes before us.

God did not just tell Israel which way to go. He went with them. “And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light” (Exodus 13:21).

Always there. “He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people” (Exodus 13:22). God never took a day off.

Light in the dark. The desert is very dark at night. The pillar of fire gave light so the people were not afraid or lost. Children in those tents could look outside and see that God was still there.

God still leads. We do not follow a cloud today. But God has given us His Word. “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

The Light of the World. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

The Good Shepherd. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want… He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake” (Psalm 23:1, 3). A shepherd walks ahead of his sheep.

Listening. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). We hear Jesus' voice when we read the Bible and pray.

He teaches us. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalm 32:8).

Never alone. “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5). Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

Do not be afraid. “And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you… do not fear nor be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

What to do. This week, before you start each day, ask God to lead you. Read one verse from the Bible and think about it as you go.

When it is dark. If you feel afraid at night, remember the pillar of fire. God gave His people light in the dark, and He is with you in the dark too.
