The Lord Will Fight for You

When You Are Afraid

“THEY WERE VERY AFRAID” · EXODUS 14:10PSALM 56:3“Whenever I am afraid,I will trust in You”ISAIAH 41:10“Fear not, for I am with you;Be not dismayed, for I am your God”“A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE” · PSALM 46:1When we are afraid, we can trust God.

Picture it. The sea is in front of you. A huge army with horses and chariots is behind you. There is nowhere to go. That is where God's people were in Exodus 14.

Real fear. “They were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord” (Exodus 14:10). God's people really did feel afraid, and so do we. God is not surprised by our fear.

Fear can make us say things. The people blamed Moses and said it would have been better to stay slaves (Exodus 14:11-12). When we are scared, we can say things we do not mean or want to go back to what is familiar.

Cry out to God. The first thing they did was right: they cried out to the Lord. Fear is a good time to pray. “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You” (Psalm 56:3).

God hears. David wrote, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

God is near. “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). A refuge is a safe place to hide.

God is with you. “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you” (Isaiah 41:10). Dismayed means very worried.

Through the waters. God promises, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2). Hard times still come, but God goes through them with us.

Tell God everything. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). Then “the peace of God… will guard your hearts” (4:7).

He cares. We can cast “all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). To cast means to throw. We can throw our worries on God.

What to do. When you feel afraid this week, stop and pray. Say Psalm 56:3: “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.”

God remembers. Israel had just seen ten plagues and the Passover. God had already proven He could protect them. When you are afraid, remember times God has helped you before.

Fear does not get the last word. At first the people were “very afraid” of Egypt. By the end of that day they feared the Lord and believed Him (Exodus 14:31). God can turn our fear into trust.

Talk to someone too. God often helps us through parents, teachers and friends. If something is making you afraid, tell a grown-up you trust.

Stand Still and Go Forward
☐
“GO FORWARD” · EXODUS 14:152 CHRONICLES 20:15“for the battle is notyours, but God's”JOSHUA 1:9“Be strong and of good courage;do not be afraid”“IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?” · ROMANS 8:31First we trust God, then we step forward.

Moses told the people two things that seem opposite. First he said, “Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13). Then God said, “Tell the children of Israel to go forward” (Exodus 14:15).

Stand still. Standing still meant stopping the panic. They did not need to run around, argue or try to fight the army. They needed to trust God.

God fights. “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14). The battle was God's, not theirs.

Not ours, but God's. Many years later, God told King Jehoshaphat, “the battle is not yours, but God's” (2 Chronicles 20:15). God fights for His people again and again.

Be still and know. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Sometimes being still helps us remember how big God is.

Go forward. But trusting God does not mean doing nothing. God said, “Go forward.” The people had to step into the path God made.

Courage to obey. God told Joshua, “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Who can be against us? “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). When God is on our side, we can step forward.

Jesus says, “Do not be afraid.” When the disciples were scared on a stormy sea, Jesus said, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:27).

Jesus won the biggest battle. Jesus fought sin and death on the cross, and He rose again. Because He won, we do not have to be afraid of death.

What to do. Think of something hard God wants you to do, like telling the truth or being kind to someone left out. First pray and trust. Then go forward and do it.

God makes a way. There was no road through the sea until God made one. When something seems impossible, remember that God can make a way where there is none.

Trust and obey. Standing still is trusting. Going forward is obeying. God wants both from us. A person who only waits never moves, and a person who only rushes ahead forgets to trust.

One step at a time. Israel did not see the whole path at once. They walked it step by step. You only need to take the next step God shows you.
