GOD GOES WITH HIS PEOPLEISAIAH 41:10“Fear not, for I am with you;Be not dismayed, for I am your God”MATTHEW 28:20“lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”Wherever we go, God goes with us.

Jacob was about one hundred and thirty years old when he packed up everything and set out for Egypt (Genesis 47:9). On the way God spoke to him: “do not fear to go down to Egypt… I will go down with you” (46:3-4). God still says the same thing to His children when they face big changes.

Big changes are hard. Jacob was leaving the land God had promised. He was taking his whole family to a foreign country. He did not know how the Egyptians would treat them. It is no wonder God's first words were “do not fear.”

Jacob stopped to worship. Before he went any further, Jacob “offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac” at Beersheba (46:1). When something big and scary is ahead, the best first step is to bring it to God.

God's answer was Himself. God did not give Jacob a map or tell him everything that would happen. He said, “I will go down with you.” What Jacob needed most was not information. It was God's presence.

God says it again and again. “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God” (Isaiah 41:10). “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). “He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Even in the dark places. David wrote, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me” (Psalm 23:4). God does not promise that we will never go through hard places. He promises that we will not go through them alone.

Jesus promised the same. Before He went back to heaven, Jesus told His followers, “lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And Hebrews says, “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5).

What it means for you. Maybe you are moving to a new house or a new school, or your family is going through a big change. You can tell God you are afraid. Then remember what He told Jacob: “I will go down with you.” He goes with you too.

Strangers and Pilgrims
☐
OUR REAL HOMEHEBREWS 11:13“strangers and pilgrimson the earth”“I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU” · JOHN 14:2Jesus is preparing a home for His people.

When Pharaoh asked Jacob how old he was, Jacob gave a strange answer: “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years” (Genesis 47:9). He called his whole life a pilgrimage.

What is a pilgrim? A pilgrim is a traveler on a journey who does not have a settled home where he is. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all lived in tents in the land God had promised them, but they never owned it, apart from a burial place (23:17-20).

Jacob was honest. “Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life” (47:9). Jacob had lied to his father, run from his brother, been tricked by Laban, lost Rachel, and grieved for Joseph for twenty years. Some of that trouble came from his own choices. He did not pretend his life had been easy.

Looking for a better country. Hebrews explains what the patriarchs were waiting for: “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off… and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13). “But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16).

Christians are pilgrims too. Peter wrote to believers, “I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims” (1 Peter 2:11). Paul said, “our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). This world is not our final home.

Life is short. James says our life “is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). That is not meant to make us sad. It is meant to make us wise: “So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

A place prepared. Joseph prepared a place for his family in Goshen, the best of the land. Jesus promised something far greater: “In My Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2-3).

What it means for you. Enjoy the good gifts God gives you here, and be honest when life is hard, as Jacob was. But remember that if you belong to Jesus, your real home is with Him. You are on a journey, and He is waiting at the end of it.
