Cain was angry. Before he did anything else, God came and warned him. God described sin like a wild animal hiding by the door, waiting to pounce.
God's warning. “If you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it” (Genesis 4:7).
A crouching animal. Picture a lion hiding in the tall grass by your front door. It is quiet, but it is ready to jump. Sin is like that.
Sin wants you. Sin does not just want one bad choice. It wants to be your master and make you its slave. It never stays small if we let it grow.
It started inside. Cain was “very angry, and his countenance fell” (Genesis 4:5). The trouble began in his heart before it ever reached his hands.
Jealousy. Cain was jealous because God accepted Abel. Jealousy is being upset that someone else has what you want. It made Cain see his brother as an enemy.
Anger is a doorway. The Bible says, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath (Ephesians 4:26). Angry feelings must be dealt with quickly.
Listen first. “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:19-20).
Guard your heart. “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Diligence means working hard and carefully. What you think about grows.
Real strength. “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Self-control is stronger than a loud temper.
Sin lies. The Bible warns about “the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Sin promises to make you feel better, but it always hurts. That is why we need God's truth.
Kind warning. God's warning to Cain was kindness. He told Cain about the danger before Cain walked into it.
Tell God. “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). You can tell God when you feel angry or jealous. He is never too busy to listen.
What to do. The next time you feel angry, stop. Take a breath, and pray, Lord, help me. Then talk to a grown-up about it.
God told Cain, “You should rule over it.” Cain did not. But God does not ask His children to fight sin alone. He gives help, a way out and a new heart.
A choice. God told Cain he could say no to sin. Sin is strong, but it is not the boss of a person who turns to God. With God's help, you can say no too.
A way out. “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Jesus understands. Jesus was “in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). He knows what it feels like. He never gave in, and He will help you.
Help on time. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
God's word inside. “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). Bible verses you know by heart help you in hard moments. Jesus used Scripture when He was tempted.
Do good instead. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). When you want to be unkind, choose a kind thing to do. Kindness shuts the door on anger.
Strength from Christ. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). He gives power to children who trust Him.
The Spirit's fruit. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). The Holy Spirit grows these in us.
A new heart. God promised, “I will give you a new heart” (Ezekiel 36:26). Jesus changes us from the inside. He gives us new desires to love and obey Him.
New creation. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). You do not have to stay the way you are.
When you fail. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9). Come back to God quickly. He never stops loving His children.
Forgive others. “Even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do” (Colossians 3:13). Forgiveness closes the door that anger opens. Holding a grudge leaves it open.
