Reaping What We Sow

“WHATEVER A MAN SOWS, THAT HE WILL ALSO REAP” · GALATIANS 6:7SOWN · GENESIS 27a blind father, a dark tentthe younger posing as the firstborn“Your brother came with deceit” · 27:35REAPED · GENESIS 29a feast, a dark nightthe firstborn given for the younger“Why then have you deceived me?” · 29:25“HE HAS NOT DEALT WITH US ACCORDING TO OUR SINS” · PSALM 103:10What Jacob planted came back to him.

Paul wrote, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Jacob's life is one of the clearest pictures of that verse anywhere in the Bible.

What Jacob sowed. Jacob tricked his father in the dark of a blind man's tent. He pretended to be the firstborn when he was the younger son. He used his brother's clothes and goat skins to fool his father's hands (Genesis 27).

What Jacob reaped. Years later, Jacob was tricked in the dark too. His uncle Laban gave him the older daughter when he wanted the younger one. And Laban's excuse was almost word for word about the firstborn: “It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn” (29:26).

How sowing works. A farmer who plants wheat gets wheat. Plant weeds, and weeds come up. Proverbs says, “He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow” (Proverbs 22:8). Jesus said, “with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” (Matthew 7:2). Lies tend to come back to liars. Unkindness tends to come back to the unkind.

But it is not luck. Paul says God is not mocked. That means God is in charge. He is not fooled, and He is fair. He lets people feel the results of what they do, so that they will turn back to Him.

Good seed too. The same verse works the other way. “He who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:8-9). Honesty, kindness and patience are seeds too.

It can take a long time. Jacob's trick in Genesis 27 and Laban's trick in Genesis 29 were years apart. Seeds do not grow overnight. Sometimes people seem to get away with wrong for a long time. But God is patient, and He is never fooled. The harvest comes.

And mercy. If God gave us exactly what we sowed, we would all be in trouble. But “He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10). That is because Jesus took the punishment our sins deserved.

What it means for you. Think about the seeds you are planting this week — in the way you talk to your family, the way you treat friends, whether you tell the truth. Ask God to help you sow good seed. And if you have planted bad seed, tell Him. His mercy is bigger than your mistakes.

Love That Serves
☐
TWO KINDS OF SERVICEJACOB · GENESIS 29:20served seven years for a bride— and still loved one more than the otherGenesis 29:30“NOT TO BE SERVED, BUT TO SERVE”and to give His life a ransom for many · Mark 10:45“WE LOVE HIM BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US” · 1 JOHN 4:19Jesus' love has no favorites.

Genesis 29:20 is a beautiful verse about love: “So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.”

Love is patient. Seven years is a long time. Jacob worked outside in the heat and cold, looking after another man's sheep (31:40). But love made the wait feel short. Paul says, “Love suffers long and is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). Real love can wait.

Love gives. Jacob had arrived with nothing. He could not pay a bride-price in money, so he gave the best thing he had: years of his life. Love is not just a feeling. It shows itself in what we are willing to give.

But Jacob's love was not perfect. He loved Rachel more than Leah (29:30), and that hurt Leah deeply. Even good love in people is mixed up with selfishness and favorites. We need a better love.

Jesus' love is better. Jacob served seven years to win a bride. Jesus “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). He “made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant… and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:7-8).

Love keeps going. When Laban tricked him, Jacob could have walked away. Instead he worked seven more years for Rachel. Real love keeps going when things are hard. Paul says love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7).

He loves the unloved. Jacob loved one sister more than the other. Jesus has no favorites. He loves the ones nobody picks, like Leah. “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son” (1 John 4:10).

What it means for you. Love that serves is the kind of love Jesus shows, and the kind He helps us show. You might serve your family by helping without being asked, or serve a friend by being patient when they are difficult. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). His love comes first, and ours grows from it.
