Little Things Matter

LUKE 16:10“He who is faithfulin what is least”LUKE 17:10“We have done whatwas our duty to do.”Small jobs done faithfully matter to God.

In Jesus' story, the king told his servant, “Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little” (Luke 19:17). One mina was a small thing next to ten cities. God cares how we handle small things.

Least and much. Jesus taught, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much” (Luke 16:10). The way we handle little things shows what we will do with big things.

Someone else's things. Jesus also asked, “And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?” (Luke 16:12). Everything we have really belongs to God. Our time, our things and our abilities are His, given to us to use for Him.

Stewards. Paul called himself and the other church leaders servants of Christ and stewards (1 Corinthians 4:1). A steward is a servant who takes care of his master's house and belongings. Paul wrote that the one thing required of a steward is that he be found faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2). Not famous, not the best at everything, but faithful.

Small beginnings. When God's people were rebuilding the temple, the work looked small. God's message through the prophet Zechariah asked who would look down on the day of small things (Zechariah 4:10). God can do great things with small beginnings.

Just doing our job. Jesus told about a servant who came in from plowing and still served his master's supper. Then Jesus said, “So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do’” (Luke 17:10). Being faithful does not make God owe us anything.

Faithful in everything. Jesus is the perfect faithful Servant. He obeyed His Father in everything. “He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). Then God raised Him from the dead.

Saved first. We are not saved by being faithful. We are saved because Jesus was faithful for us. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Then He helps us be faithful too.

Application. Pick one small job this week and do it well for Jesus: clear the table, finish your homework, keep a promise, or tell the truth when it is hard. Little things matter to Him.

Faithful People in God's Story
☐
DANIEL 6:4No fault was found, because he was faithfulNEHEMIAH 7:2A faithful man whofeared God more than manyDaniel was faithful in his work, and no fault was found.

The Bible tells about many people who were faithful in their work for God. Some had important jobs and some had ordinary ones. All of them simply did what God gave them to do.

Daniel at work. Daniel served King Darius. He did his work so well that the king planned to put him over the whole kingdom (Daniel 6:3). Other leaders looked for something wrong in his work, but they could not find anything, because he was faithful (Daniel 6:4), and he kept praying to God, as he had always done (Daniel 6:10).

A faithful man. After the wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt, Nehemiah put his brother Hanani and a man named Hananiah in charge of the city. This Hananiah lived long after Daniel's friend of the same name. Nehemiah said he was a faithful man who feared God more than many (Nehemiah 7:2). To fear God means to honor Him and want to obey Him.

A servant of the church. Paul asked the believers in Rome to welcome Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea, and to help her with whatever she needed. He said she had helped many people, and Paul too (Romans 16:1-2).

A family that served. Paul wrote that the household of Stephanas had given themselves to serving God's people (1 Corinthians 16:15). A whole family can be faithful together.

Helpers with ordinary names. Paul wrote about Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister who would bring the church Paul's news (Colossians 4:7). He also wrote about Epaphras, a faithful minister of Christ who had taught the Colossians about Jesus (Colossians 1:7). Most people today have never heard of them, but God saw their faithful work.

Made faithful by grace. Paul once hurt Christians. Later he thanked Jesus for counting him faithful and putting him to work in His service (1 Timothy 1:12-13). Jesus does not only look for faithful people. He makes people faithful.

When we fail. Everyone who serves God sometimes fails. But God never stops being faithful. Paul wrote that even if we are faithless, He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). God is faithful, and He has called us to belong to His Son, Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:9).

The gospel. Jesus is the faithful One who never failed. He died for our sins and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Everyone who trusts Him belongs to Him, and He helps His people stay faithful.

Application. Think of someone who serves faithfully at your church or in your home, maybe someone few people notice. Thank that person this week, and ask God to make you faithful too.
