Lift Up Your Heads

PSALM 24:7“Lift up your heads,O you gates!”PSALM 47:5“God has gone upwith a shout,”Lift up your heads, O you gates, and the King of glory shall come in.

Who may go up? Psalm 24 asks a big question: “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?” (Psalm 24:3). To ascend means to go up.

The answer. “He who has clean hands and a pure heart” (24:4). Clean hands mean right actions. A pure heart means right thoughts and wishes.

Not one of us. No one has perfectly clean hands and a pure heart. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). On our own, none of us could go up into God's holy place.

The One who could. Jesus never sinned. His hands were clean and His heart was pure. Yet He took our sins on Himself and died on the cross for us. Then God raised Him from the dead.

Open the gates! “Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in” (24:7). The gates are told to open wide for a great King.

Who is He? “Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle” (24:8). This King has fought a battle and won.

The Lord of hosts. The question comes again, and the answer is, “The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory” (24:10). Hosts means armies. This King rules over the armies of heaven.

A picture of Jesus. Many Christians see Psalm 24 and Psalm 47 as a picture of Jesus going up to heaven after He won the victory over sin and death.

Gone up with a shout. Psalm 47 says, “God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet” (Psalm 47:5).

Sing praises. “Sing praises to our King, sing praises!” (47:6). When the King goes up, His people sing.

King of all the earth. “For God is the King of all the earth” (47:7). “God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne” (47:8). Jesus, who “was parted from them and carried up into heaven” (Luke 24:51), reigns today.

What this means for you. Jesus went up with clean hands, so that people with dirty hands could be forgiven and welcomed. Trust Him, and praise Him as your King.

He Ascended on High
☐
EPHESIANS 4:8“When He ascendedon high,”EPHESIANS 4:10“far above allthe heavens,”He who came down is also the One who went up far above all the heavens.

A victory song. Psalm 68 is a song about God winning the victory for His people. It says, “You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men” (Psalm 68:18).

A victory parade. When a king in Bible times won a battle, he often came home leading the captives he had taken. Captives are prisoners. People brought gifts to honor the winning king.

About Jesus. Paul quoted this psalm about Jesus: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men” (Ephesians 4:8). The King in the psalm is Jesus.

The winner. Jesus went up as the winning King. By His death and rising He won the victory over sin and death: “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

He gives gifts. In the psalm the King receives gifts. When Jesus went up, He gave gifts to His people.

Grace for each one. “But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (Ephesians 4:7). Grace is God's kindness that we do not deserve. Every believer receives it from Jesus.

He came down first. “Now this, ‘He ascended’—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?” (4:9). Before Jesus went up, He came down to earth.

All the way down. Jesus came down to be born as a baby. He lived as a servant among us. He went so low that He died on the cross for our sins and was buried.

Far above. “He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things” (4:10). The same Jesus who came down is the One who went up.

Seated in power. God “raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power” (Ephesians 1:20-21). No ruler anywhere is greater than Jesus.

Gifts that build up. Jesus also gave His church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, to help His people grow and serve (Ephesians 4:11-12).

What this means for you. Jesus came all the way down to save you and went all the way up to reign. Trust Him, and use the grace He gives you to serve Him.
