God's Day of Rest
☐
GOD'S DAY OF RESTGENESIS 2:2“He rested on theseventh day”EXODUS 20:8“Remember theSabbath day”God rested on the seventh day and gave His people rest.

Long before there were synagogues or churches, God gave His people a gift: one day in seven to stop working and rest. That day is called the Sabbath.

God rested first. “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done” (Genesis 2:2). God was not tired. He rested because His work was finished and good.

A blessed day. “Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3). Sanctified means set apart as holy, special for God.

A command. At Mount Sinai God said, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work” (Exodus 20:8-9).

Rest for everyone. On that day no one was to work: not the father, not the children, not the servants, and not even the animals (Exodus 20:10). Rest was for the whole household.

Learning to trust. In the desert God sent manna, bread from heaven. On the sixth day He gave enough for two days, so “the people rested on the seventh day” (Exodus 16:30). Resting showed that they trusted God to provide.

Free to rest. Israel had been slaves in Egypt, where nobody got a day off. God set them free, and the Sabbath reminded them every week that God had rescued them (Deuteronomy 5:15).

A gift for people. Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27). God gave the day to help people, not to trap them.

Rules on top of rules. By Jesus' time the religious leaders had added many small rules. Picking grain or healing a hand could get you in trouble. God's gift had started to feel like a heavy load.

Jesus and the Sabbath. Jesus loved God's day. “As His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read” (Luke 4:16).

Doing good. On the Sabbath Jesus taught, healed and helped people. He showed that God's day is a day for worship and for kindness.

Why rest matters. Rest reminds us that God holds the world together, not us. We can stop, and the world keeps going, because God is in charge.

What we learn. Rest is God's good gift. It is a time to stop, to remember God and to enjoy Him.

What to do. This week, choose a time to put away work and screens. Thank God for something He made, and read a story about Jesus with your family.

Rest for Your Soul
☐
REST FOR YOUR SOULMATTHEW 11:28“Come to Me…I will give you rest”HEBREWS 4:9“There remains thereforea rest for the people of God”Jesus gives rest to everyone who comes to Him.

Jesus did not only explain the Sabbath. He said He is its Lord. And He offers a rest that goes much deeper than one day off each week.

Lord of the Sabbath. Jesus said, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath” (Luke 6:5). God made the Sabbath, so only God can be its Lord. Jesus was telling them that He is God.

The Maker of the day. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3). The One who rested on the seventh day was standing in the grainfield.

Tired hearts. People get tired in their bodies, but sin makes our hearts tired too. Guilt and fear are heavy loads to carry.

Come to Me. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Heavy laden means carrying a load that is too heavy for you.

Gentle and lowly. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29). A yoke is a wooden bar that joins two animals so they pull together. Jesus pulls with us.

An easy yoke. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). The leaders gave people heavy rules. Jesus gives people Himself.

Rest from trying to earn. “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works” (Hebrews 4:9-10). We stop trying to earn God's love and trust what Jesus did.

It is finished. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). His work to save us was complete, just as God's work of creation had been complete.

The first day. Jesus' body rested in the tomb on the Sabbath. Then, “very early in the morning, on the first day of the week” (Mark 16:2), the women found the tomb empty. Jesus had risen!

A shadow and the real thing. Paul says the Sabbaths “are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ” (Colossians 2:16-17). A shadow shows a shape, but the real thing is Jesus Himself.

Still a good gift. Taking time to rest and worship is still wise and good. But our true rest is not a day. It is a Person: Jesus.

What we learn. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and Lord of everything. In Him we find rest for our souls.

What to do. Tell Jesus about something that feels heavy to you. Then thank Him that He carries it with you.
