Mercy That Does Something

EXODUS 23:5Help even the donkeyof someone who hates you.MATTHEW 25:35“I was hungry andyou gave Me food”Mercy you can see: helping lift a heavy load.

When Jesus asked who was a neighbor to the hurt man, the lawyer answered, “He who showed mercy on him” (Luke 10:37). Mercy is not only a kind feeling. In the Bible, mercy is something you can see.

What mercy is. Mercy is kindness to someone who is hurting or in need, especially someone who cannot pay you back. The Samaritan did not just feel sorry. He showed mercy with his hands, his donkey and his money.

Even an enemy's donkey. Long before Jesus told His story, God's law said that if you saw your enemy's donkey lying under a heavy load, you must help him with it (Exodus 23:4-5). God's people were to help even people who did not like them.

Do not hide. Another law said that if you saw your neighbor's donkey or ox fallen down by the road, you must not hide yourself from it. You must help him lift it up again (Deuteronomy 22:4). The priest and the Levite crossed to the other side. God's law said to stay and help.

Not tomorrow. Proverbs says not to hold back good from someone who needs it when you are able to help. Do not tell your neighbor to come back tomorrow when you have what he needs right now (Proverbs 3:27-28).

What God asks. The prophet Micah wrote that the Lord asks His people to do what is right, to love mercy and to walk humbly with their God (Micah 6:8).

Words are not enough. James asked a hard question. Suppose a brother or sister has no clothes and no food, and you only tell them to go in peace and stay warm, but give them nothing. What good is that? (James 2:15-16). Real faith shows itself in what it does (James 2:17).

Share your bread. Isaiah said that the worship God wants includes sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the poor into your home and giving clothes to people who have none (Isaiah 58:7).

Jesus counts it. Jesus said His people would hear Him say, “I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink” (Matthew 25:35).

Not to earn heaven. We do not show mercy to earn God's love. Jesus gives eternal life as a free gift. Then He makes us new so we can do good: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10).

What to do. This week, look for one need you can meet right away: share your snack, carry something heavy, eat lunch with a kid who is alone. Do not wait until tomorrow.

People Who Showed Mercy

ACTS 9:36Dorcas was full of goodworks and kind deeds.HEBREWS 13:16Do not forget to dogood and to share.Dorcas made coats and clothes.

Jesus told the lawyer, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). All through the Bible we meet people who did just that. Their stories show what mercy looks like in real life.

Captives sent home. Long before Jesus, the army of Israel's northern kingdom, whose capital city was Samaria, took many people from Judah as captives. A prophet named Oded told them to send the captives home (2 Chronicles 28:8-11).

Carried to Jericho. Some leaders listened. They gave the captives clothes and sandals, food and drink, and rubbed oil on them. They let the weak ones ride on donkeys and brought them to their own people at Jericho (2 Chronicles 28:12-15). Many Christians hear an echo of this story in the one Jesus told.

Dorcas. In the town of Joppa lived a follower of Jesus named Dorcas. The Bible says she was full of good works and kind deeds (Acts 9:36). She made coats and clothes, most likely for the widows of Joppa (Acts 9:39).

Remembered for love. When Dorcas got sick and died, the widows showed Peter the clothes she had made for them. Peter prayed, and God raised her to life (Acts 9:39-40). Her mercy had touched many lives.

A jailer's change. In Philippi, Paul and Silas were beaten and locked up (Acts 16:22-24). That night God shook the prison, and the jailer believed in Jesus. The same hour, he washed the wounds of the men he had locked up (Acts 16:33).

Kindness on an island. Paul's ship was wrecked near the island of Malta. The people there showed unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed everyone, because it was raining and cold (Acts 28:1-2).

A friend who searched. Later Paul was a prisoner in Rome. His friend Onesiphorus was not ashamed of Paul's chains. He searched hard until he found Paul, and he cheered him up again and again (2 Timothy 1:16-17).

What they share. Each of these people saw a need, came close and gave something: clothes, food, time, a fire, a search through a big city. That is mercy you can see.

A sacrifice God loves. Hebrews 13:16 says not to forget to do good and to share, because God is pleased with that kind of sacrifice.

Where it comes from. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Every kindness starts with God, who is merciful first. For us, that mercy came in Jesus, who died for our sins.

What to do. Think of someone who is sick, new, lonely or in trouble. Ask a parent to help you do one thing for them this week, like a card, a meal or a visit.
