The Gardener Who Cares
☐
JOHN 15:1“My Father isthe vinedresser.”ISAIAH 27:3“I water itevery moment;”The Father cares for His vineyard every moment.

Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser” (John 15:1). A vinedresser is a gardener who looks after a vineyard. Jesus wanted His friends to know that the Father Himself takes care of them.

The first Gardener. At the very beginning, “The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden” (Genesis 2:8), and He made good trees grow there. God has always been a God who plants and makes things grow.

A vineyard God guards. Isaiah wrote about a day when God's people would sing about His vineyard. The Lord said, “I, the Lord, keep it, I water it every moment; Lest any hurt it, I keep it night and day” (Isaiah 27:3).

Never off duty. God never forgets His vineyard, not for one day, and He does not stop watching at night. He cares for His people all the time.

Close by. Jesus did not describe the Father as an owner who lives far away. He called Him the vinedresser, the One who tends the vines Himself. God is close to every branch joined to Jesus.

For His glory. Isaiah also said that God’s people would be called “trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified” (Isaiah 61:3). Jesus said, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit” (John 15:8).

Fruit from God. Through the prophet Hosea, God told His people, “Your fruit is found in Me” (Hosea 14:8). Good fruit in our lives comes from God, not from us.

The Father’s love. Why does the Father care so much? Jesus said, “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you” (John 15:9). The Gardener loves His branches.

Safe in His hand. Jesus said of His people, “no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand” (John 10:29). The Father does not lose even one.

Why we need Him. On our own, we cannot grow the good fruit God wants, because sin has spoiled every one of us. Paul wrote, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18).

The Father’s gift. Paul wrote that the Father “did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all” (Romans 8:32). Jesus died for our sins and rose again so that we could be joined to Him.

What this means for you. If you trust Jesus, you are not on your own. The Father is watching over you today, and He is helping you grow.

Pruned to Bear More Fruit
☐
JOHN 15:2“He prunes, that itmay bear more fruit.”LEVITICUS 25:3“prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit;”A pruned branch grows even more fruit.

Jesus said, “every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit” (John 15:2). To prune is to cut back parts of a plant so it can grow better.

Part of caring for a vineyard. God's law for Israel said, “six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit” (Leviticus 25:3). Pruning was a normal part of looking after vines, and so was the harvest that came after it.

Not a punishment. Look at which branch gets pruned. It is the branch that is already bearing fruit. The Father prunes it because it is growing well, and He wants even more.

Pruned and clean. In the next verse Jesus said, “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you” (John 15:3). In the Greek that John wrote in, the word for prunes and the word for clean come from the same family. When the Father prunes, He is making His branches clean.

How God prunes. Many Christians see God's pruning in three ways: He uses His word to show us what needs to change, He takes away things that pull our hearts from Jesus, and sometimes He uses hard times to make our trust grow deeper.

It can hurt for a while. “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness” (Hebrews 12:11).

A prayer you can pray. David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23). He asked God to see if there was any wicked way in him and to lead him in the way everlasting. You can ask God the same thing.

Joined to bear fruit. Paul wrote that believers belong “to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God” (Romans 7:4). We are joined to Jesus so that His life can grow fruit in us.

Fruit that lasts. Paul also wrote, “you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life” (Romans 6:22). Holiness means belonging to God and becoming more like Him.

Why we need it. Every one of us has sin that does not belong in a branch of the true vine. We cannot cut it away by ourselves.

Jesus made us clean. Jesus died on the cross to take away our sin, and He rose again. Everyone who trusts Him is forgiven and made clean, and the Father keeps working to help them grow.

What this means for you. When God is changing something in your life, it is not because He has stopped loving you. It is because He loves you and wants you to bear more fruit.
