On the night before the cross, Thomas said, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Thomas did not pretend. He told Jesus what he did not understand.
Questions are welcome. God does not want us to hide our questions from Him. All through the Bible, people who loved God brought Him their hardest questions.
Why so far away? One psalm begins with two questions: “Why do You stand afar off, O Lord? Why do You hide in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1). The writer saw proud people hurting the weak, and it looked as if God was doing nothing.
Still praying. The writer did not walk away from God. He kept praying: “Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble” (Psalm 10:12). His question turned into a prayer.
God sees. Then he remembered what is true. He prayed, “But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief” (Psalm 10:14). People who are helpless can trust themselves to God.
God hears. Near the end, the psalm says, “Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble” (Psalm 10:17). God listens to humble people when they pray to Him.
A night with no sleep. In Psalm 77 a man named Asaph could not sleep. He asked God hard questions: “Will the Lord cast off forever?” and “Has God forgotten to be gracious?” (Psalm 77:7, 9).
Remembering. Then Asaph decided to remember what God had done: “I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old” (Psalm 77:11). Then he praised God: “You are the God who does wonders” (77:14).
Talking to God. Both of these men told God exactly what they did not understand. Then they remembered who He is. Honest prayer is a way of trusting God.
Jesus knew. Later that same night, Jesus could tell that His disciples wanted to ask Him something. He answered them before they even asked (John 16:19).
The biggest question. The biggest question of all is how a sinner can come to God. God answered it at the cross. Jesus died for our sins and rose again, so anyone who trusts Him can come to the Father.
What this means for you. When you do not understand something, tell God. Ask your questions in prayer, and ask a parent or a pastor to help you look in the Bible. God invites you to come to Him.
When Thomas asked about the way, Jesus said, “I am the way” (John 14:6). Long before that night, God gave a man named Job an answer of the same kind.
A man who loved God. Job loved God and turned away from evil (Job 1:1). Then, in a short time, Job lost his children, his animals and his health.
Job’s questions. Job did not understand why this was happening. He asked God many questions. He even said, “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him” (Job 23:3).
God answered. At last “the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind” (Job 38:1). A whirlwind is a mighty storm of wind. God had not forgotten Job. He had heard every word Job said, and now He came near to speak.
Questions back. God did not give Job a list of reasons. Instead, God asked Job, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (Job 38:4). He reminded Job of the day “When the morning stars sang together” (38:7).
How great God is. God showed Job the sky, the snow, the storms and the wild animals, all made by Him and cared for by Him (Job 38–39). Job began to see how great and wise God is.
Job’s answer. Job answered, “What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth” (Job 40:4). He did not need to argue anymore.
Now I see You. Job told God, “I know that You can do everything” (Job 42:2). Then he said, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You” (Job 42:5).
God was the answer. Job never got a list of reasons. He got something better. He met God Himself, and that was enough for him. Knowing God was better than knowing every reason.
God answers in Jesus. “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (John 1:18). In Jesus, God shows us Himself.
The answer we need most. Our deepest need is not more information. It is to be forgiven and brought to God. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again, so that we can know God and be with Him.
What this means for you. You may not get an answer to every why. But you can know Jesus, and He is the answer you need most.
