A Strong Man With a Weak Heart
☐
A STRONG MAN WITH A WEAK HEARTJUDGES 21:25“what was right inhis own eyes”1 SAMUEL 16:7“the Lord looksat the heart”Samson chose by his eyes, but the Lord looks at the heart.

Samson is one of the most famous people in the Bible. He was strong enough to tear apart a lion. But his heart was weak in ways his muscles could not fix. God still used him, and that tells us a lot about God.

Chosen before birth. The angel said, “He shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines” (Judges 13:5). God picked Samson before he had done anything good or bad.

Led by his eyes. Samson said about the Philistine woman, “Get her for me, for she pleases me well” (14:3). He chose by what looked good to him, not by what God said.

A broken promise. A Nazirite was set apart for God. He stayed away from wine, never cut his hair and did not go near dead bodies (Numbers 6:2-6). Samson took honey out of a dead lion and kept it a secret (14:8-9).

Full of anger. When he was tricked, “his anger was aroused” (14:19). When his wife was given away, he said, “This time I shall be blameless regarding the Philistines if I harm them!” (15:3).

Living for payback. Samson told the men of Judah, “As they did to me, so I have done to them” (15:11). He thought mostly about getting even.

God still worked. The Bible says “it was of the Lord” (14:4). Again and again “the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him” (14:6; 14:19; 15:14). God was fighting for His people.

Did God like Samson's sin? No. God never calls sin good. He used Samson in spite of his sin, not because of it. The pain that followed came from Samson's own choices.

Others God used. Jacob tricked his brother. Moses killed a man and later struck the rock in anger. Peter said three times that he did not know Jesus. God used each of them, and God changed each of them.

The only kind there is. God uses imperfect people because there is no other kind. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

God looks at the heart. “For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Samson cared about the outside. God cares about the inside.

Real strength. “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty” (Proverbs 16:32). Saying no to your own anger takes more strength than tearing apart a lion.

What we learn. God can use you, even with your weak spots. But He does not want you to stay the same. He wants to change your heart.

What to do. This week, ask God to show you one weak spot in your heart. Tell Him about it and ask for His help.

Grace That Changes Us
☐
GRACE THAT CHANGES US2 CORINTHIANS 12:9“My grace issufficient for you”1 JOHN 1:9“He is faithful andjust to forgive us”Jesus forgives everyone who comes to Him and makes them new.

If God uses imperfect people, does sin still matter? Yes, it matters a lot. Grace is God's kindness that we do not deserve. Grace forgives our sin, and grace also changes us.

On the list of faith. Hebrews 11 names people who trusted God, and Samson is there: “For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson” (Hebrews 11:32).

Weak made strong. Those people “out of weakness were made strong” (Hebrews 11:34). Their strength came from God, not from themselves.

Samson's prayer. At Lehi Samson called himself “Your servant” and said God had given “this great deliverance” (Judges 15:18). In that moment he knew he needed God.

Sin still costs. Samson's choices brought pain. His wife and her father died in the fire of revenge (15:6). Later his choices led him into chains (Judges 16:21).

God corrects His children. “For whom the Lord loves He chastens” (Hebrews 12:6). Chastens means corrects. A good father corrects his children because he loves them.

Not permission to sin. Grace never means, I can sin because God will forgive. Paul said that believers are “set free from sin” (Romans 6:18). Grace sets us free from sin, not free to sin.

Strength in weakness. Jesus told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The one perfect Man. Every judge failed somewhere. Jesus never did. He “was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).

He took our sin. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Come clean. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Samson kept secrets. We can bring ours to God.

A new heart. David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). That is a prayer God loves to answer.

What we learn. God does not wait for perfect people. He forgives sinners who trust Jesus, and He makes them new.

What to do. Is there a secret sin you are hiding? Tell God about it today, and talk to a parent you trust. Then thank Jesus that He forgives.
