The Good Shepherd Goes Before

THE GOOD SHEPHERD GOES BEFOREJOHN 10:4“he goes before them;and the sheep follow him”JOHN 10:11“I am thegood shepherd”Jesus the Good Shepherd leads His sheep.

In the wilderness, God went ahead of Israel in a cloud. In the Gospels, Jesus describes Himself as a shepherd who goes ahead of His sheep.

In front. “The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way” (Exodus 13:21). God did not send Israel ahead alone.

Every day. “He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people” (Exodus 13:22). Not one day went by without God showing He was there.

Even when they failed. “Yet in Your manifold mercies You did not forsake them in the wilderness” (Nehemiah 9:19). Manifold means many kinds. God stayed with them even when they grumbled and disobeyed.

The shepherd calls. Jesus said a shepherd “calls his own sheep by name and leads them out” (John 10:3). He knows every one of His sheep, and He knows you.

He goes first. “When he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice” (John 10:4). He does not push the sheep from behind. He walks in front.

The Good Shepherd. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). No cloud could do that. Jesus did more than show the way. He died to bring us home.

Hearing His voice. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). We hear His voice when we read the Bible and pray.

A psalm. “The Lord is my shepherd… He leads me beside the still waters… He leads me in the paths of righteousness” (Psalm 23:1-3).

Light for the path. “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Jesus leads us through the Bible. A lamp does not show the whole road, but it shows the next step.

The light of the world. Jesus said, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Always with us. “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

What we learn. Jesus goes ahead of us like the cloud went ahead of Israel, and He gave His life to bring us home.

What to do. This week, read a short part of the Gospels each day and ask Jesus to lead you.

Led by the Spirit
☐
LED BY THE SPIRITROMANS 8:14“led by the Spirit of God,these are sons of God”PSALM 119:105“a lamp to my feetAnd a light to my path”God's Spirit and God's Word show us the way.

Israel had a cloud to follow. Christians do not see a cloud, but Jesus promised Someone even closer to lead us: the Holy Spirit.

A Helper. Jesus said, “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:16).

With you and in you. The Spirit of truth “dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). The cloud was above the tent; the Spirit lives in God's people. That is even closer than the cloud.

A guide. “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). He helps us understand what God says in the Bible.

God's children. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14). Being led by God is a sign that we belong to His family.

Walking together. “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). Walking is a step-by-step journey, like Israel's. We do not have to see the whole trip, only the next step.

A voice behind you. Isaiah wrote, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21).

God teaches. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalm 32:8). God watches over us and shows us the way to go.

Trust. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding… And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Waiting. “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7). Sometimes the Spirit leads us to wait, like the cloud that stayed. Waiting with God is never wasted time.

Strength while waiting. “Those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31).

How the Spirit leads. He never leads against the Bible. He uses God's Word, prayer and wise Christian friends to show us the way. Parents, pastors and teachers can help us hear Him too.

What we learn. The same God who led Israel by a cloud leads His people today by His Spirit.

What to do. Before a choice this week, pray, “Holy Spirit, please lead me,” and look for what the Bible says.
