Paul said that knowing Christ is worth more than everything (Philippians 3:8). Long before Paul, a psalm writer said that being near God was worth more than anything.
Little birds (84:3). “Even the sparrow has found a home, And the swallow a nest for herself, Where she may lay her young— Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts, My King and my God.” Small birds built their nests near God’s altars at the temple.
Close to God. The writer wished he could be as close to God’s house as those birds were. The birds were small, yet they had a home near God.
My King and my God. The writer called God “My King and my God.” God was not far away. He was the writer’s own King.
Happy people (84:4). “Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; They will still be praising You.” Blessed means truly happy because God is good to you. People who stay near God keep praising Him.
Better than a thousand (84:10). “For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.” The courts were the open yards around God’s temple, where people came to worship.
One day. One day near God is better than a thousand days anywhere else. Time with God is worth more than anything else we could do.
A doorkeeper. The writer said, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God.” A doorkeeper stood at the door. It was a humble job, but it was close to God.
Far from God. He would rather do that “Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” The nicest tent is not worth having if it is far from God.
The same heart. Paul let go of everything he once counted as gain so that he could know Christ. Being near God is the best place to be.
Sin keeps us far. Our sin keeps us away from God. We cannot climb near Him by being good.
Jesus brings us near. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Everyone who trusts Him is brought near.
Any day. Because of Jesus, you can come near God any day and in any place, by praying and reading His Word. You can also be near Him when you worship with His people at church.
What this means for you. Choose a time each day this week to be with God. Thank Him that one day with Him is better than a thousand.
Paul wanted to “gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8). The psalm writer told what God gives to the people who trust Him.
A sun (84:11). “For the Lord God is a sun and shield.” The sun gives light and warmth. Without it nothing could grow.
Light and life. God is like that sun. He gives light so we can see what is true, and He gives life to everything.
A shield. A shield keeps someone safe. God watches over His people.
Grace and glory. “The Lord will give grace and glory.” Grace is God’s kindness that we do not deserve. Glory is the beauty and honor of God that He shares with His children.
Nothing good held back. “No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.” Withhold means to keep back. God does not keep back anything that is truly good for His children.
Good, not every wish. This does not mean God gives us every toy or every wish. God knows what is truly good, the way a loving parent does. Sometimes His good answer is no, or not yet.
Walking uprightly. To walk uprightly means to live God’s way, trusting Him and following Him. Grace comes first. God gives grace, and then He helps His children walk with Him.
Trust (84:12). “O Lord of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You!” The truly happy person is the one who trusts God.
Lord of hosts. The Lord of hosts means the Lord over heaven’s armies of angels. Nothing is too hard for Him.
The best good thing. God gave the very best gift when He sent His Son, Jesus. Knowing Jesus is the best good thing of all.
We do not deserve it. We have all sinned, and we do not deserve God’s gifts. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again.
Trust Him. Everyone who trusts Jesus is forgiven and given grace. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
What this means for you. When you ask God for something this week, thank Him that He knows what is good. Trust Him with the answer.
