Think about the difference between a paycheck and a birthday present. A paycheck is something you earn. A present is something someone gives because they love you. Paul uses that difference to explain how we are saved.
Wages are owed. “Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt” (Romans 4:4). When a worker finishes the job, the boss owes him his pay.
A gift is free. God gives righteousness “to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly” (Romans 4:5).
What sin earns. There is one paycheck we have all earned. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Sin always pays its wages in full.
Nobody is owed. No one can come to God and say that He owes them heaven. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Like David. David was a king who had sinned badly, and he could not earn God's forgiveness. Paul says David describes “the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works” (Romans 4:6). Imputes means credits.
What God gives. The same verse goes on: “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Our best is not enough. “All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Even our good deeds are mixed with pride and selfishness.
Not by our works. God saved us “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy” (Titus 3:5).
Freely. We are “justified freely by His grace” (Romans 3:24). Grace means kindness we do not deserve.
Saved by grace. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Without money. God invites, “And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat” (Isaiah 55:1). You cannot pay for it, and you do not need to.
Someone paid. The gift is free to us, but it cost Jesus everything. “Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9).
Finished. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). Nothing is left for us to add to what He did.
What to do. If you have been trying to earn God's love, stop and thank Him instead. Tell Him you are trusting Jesus and receiving His gift.
When someone gives you a wonderful gift, you do not pay them back. You say thank you, and you enjoy it. People who have received God's gift live in a new way.
Happy forgiven people. David wrote, “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered” (Psalm 32:1). Blessed means truly happy.
Not counted. “Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity” (Psalm 32:2). God does not keep a list of our sins against us.
Honest with God. David said, “I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden” (Psalm 32:5). People who receive God's gift are honest with Him about their sin.
Forgiven and clean. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Far away. “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).
No bragging. “And what do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Corinthians 4:7). People who received a gift cannot look down on others.
Good works follow. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10). We do good works because we are saved, not to get saved.
Thankful hearts. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). Saying thank you is how gift-receivers talk to God.
Safe in His love. Nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39). You did not earn God's love, so you cannot lose it by having a bad day.
Welcomed. Jesus promised, “The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37).
Free from fear. Gift-receivers do not have to worry that God will change His mind. Jesus said that whoever believes “has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).
Kind to others. People who have been forgiven learn to forgive. God was kind to us when we did not deserve it, so we can be kind to people who do not deserve it either.
Share the gift. “Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). Good news this good is meant to be shared.
What to do. Make a list of five gifts God has given you. Thank Him for each one, and tell a friend about the best gift of all.
