Ruth said to Boaz, “Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative” (Ruth 3:9). One Hebrew word in her request helps us understand what she was asking and how God loves His people.
One word, two meanings. The Hebrew word is kanaf (say: kah-NAHF). It can mean the wing of a bird. It can also mean the edge or corner of a piece of clothing.
God's wings. In Ruth 2:12 Boaz prayed that Ruth would be rewarded by “the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” That is kanaf.
Boaz's wing. In Ruth 3:9 Ruth asked Boaz to spread his kanaf, the corner of his cloak, over her. It is the very same word.
An answer to prayer. Boaz had prayed for God's wings to cover Ruth. Now Ruth asked Boaz to be part of God's answer. God often answers prayers through His people.
What covering meant. Spreading the corner of a cloak over a woman was a way of saying, I will marry you and protect you. Ruth was asking Boaz to marry her and redeem her family. It was a humble, honest and brave request.
A covenant. A covenant is a binding promise. Marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman, made before God.
God uses the same picture. In Ezekiel 16:8 God describes His love for Israel this way: He spread His garment over her and made a covenant with her, and she became His.
A glad yes. Boaz did not make Ruth beg. He said, “do not fear. I will do for you all that you request” (Ruth 3:11). Covering love says yes gladly.
Safe under His wings. “He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge” (Psalm 91:4).
Precious love. “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings” (Psalm 36:7).
Jesus' wings. Jesus said He longed to gather His people “as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” (Matthew 23:37).
What we learn. God's love is a covering, faithful love. He protects, provides and makes a lasting promise to the people who come to Him.
What to do. When you feel unsafe or alone, pray and ask the Lord to cover you with His wings. He loves to answer that prayer.
The word kanaf, the corner of a garment, shows up again in the New Testament story of a woman who reached for Jesus. It also helps us understand how Jesus covers us.
Tassels on the corners. God told Israel to put tassels on the corners of their clothes (Numbers 15:38-39). Seeing the tassels would remind them to obey God's commands.
Jesus wore them. Jesus kept God's law perfectly, so His clothes had those tassels too.
A woman reached out. “A woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment” (Matthew 9:20). She had been sick and alone for years.
Her faith. “For she said to herself, ‘If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well’” (Matthew 9:21).
Jesus answered. “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well” (Matthew 9:22). Jesus called her daughter. She was welcomed, not pushed away.
Many were healed. In another town, people begged Jesus to let them touch the hem of His garment, and everyone who touched it was made well (Matthew 14:36).
Healing in His wings. Malachi 4:2 promises that the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in His wings. Many Christians see Jesus in that promise.
Our sin covered. “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered” (Psalm 32:1).
White as snow. “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). God does more than hide our sin. He makes us clean.
How it is covered. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus died for our sins and rose again.
The Bridegroom. The Bible calls the church the bride of Christ. Paul wrote, “I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:2).
A wedding to come. “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come” (Revelation 19:7). God's people will be with Jesus forever.
What we learn. Ruth asked to be covered by her redeemer. Many Christians see in her request a picture of how we come to Jesus and ask Him to cover our sin.
What to do. Like the woman in the crowd, reach out to Jesus in faith. Ask Him to forgive you and make you His own.
