LOOK AND LIVENUMBERS 21:9“when he looked at thebronze serpent, he lived”JOHN 3:15“whoever believesin Him”Everyone who looked at the bronze serpent lived.

John 3:16 may be the best-known verse in the Bible. Just before He spoke it, Jesus reminded Nicodemus of an old story from Numbers 21. That story helps us understand the verse.

Tired and grumbling. Israel was traveling the long way around Edom, and “the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way” (Numbers 21:4).

Speaking against God. “The people spoke against God and against Moses” (Numbers 21:5). They called God's manna “this worthless bread.” God had fed them every day, and they complained about His gift.

The snakes. “So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died” (Numbers 21:6). Sin is serious, and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

We have sinned. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you” (Numbers 21:7). They asked Moses to pray, and he did.

An unusual cure. God said, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live” (Numbers 21:8).

Just look. “If a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived” (Numbers 21:9). Nobody had to earn it, and nobody had to be strong enough. Anyone who looked lived.

Everyone who is bitten. The cure was for everyone who was bitten, young or old, rich or poor. The only person it could not help was the one who refused to look.

Lifted up. Jesus said, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). Jesus was talking about the cross.

Why a snake? The cure looked like the very thing that was hurting them. On the cross, Jesus took our sin on Himself. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Look and live. Believing in Jesus is like that look. You stop trusting yourself and trust what God has done. “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:15).

For all peoples. Jesus said, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12:32).

What we learn. God's cure for sin is Jesus on the cross. We are saved by looking to Him in faith, not by fixing ourselves.

What to do. When you feel bad about your sin, do not just try harder. Look to Jesus, tell Him what you did, and thank Him for dying for you.

God So Loved the World
☐
GOD SO LOVED THE WORLDJOHN 3:16“For God so lovedthe world”1 JOHN 3:1“that we should becalled children of God”God loves people everywhere, and He gave His Son for us.

Right after the bronze serpent, Jesus told Nicodemus why the Son of Man had to be lifted up: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

God. The good news starts with God, not with us. He made the first move.

So loved. God's love is big and strong. It does not wait for us to be good first. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

The world. The world means people everywhere, from every country and every family. God's love is not only for nice people or church people.

He gave. Real love gives. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends” (John 15:13).

His only begotten Son. Jesus is God's one and only Son. God gave His dearest. Paul wrote that God “did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all” (Romans 8:32).

Whoever. Whoever means anyone. No one is too young, too old, too bad or too far away.

Believes in Him. To believe in Jesus means to trust Him, not just to know facts about Him. It is like the Israelites looking at the bronze serpent.

Should not perish. To perish means to be lost forever, away from God. That is what sin deserves. Jesus came so that we would not perish.

Everlasting life. Everlasting life means living with God forever. It starts the day you believe, and it never ends.

Not to condemn. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17). Jesus came as a Savior, not to shame people.

Children of God. “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1).

What we learn. John 3:16 tells the whole good news: God loved, God gave, we believe, we live.

What to do. Learn John 3:16 by heart this week. Then think of one person you could share it with, and ask God for a chance to tell them.
